The Turn Back The Alarm Handicap (Grade 3)- $200.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
October 30, 2015
In her last race, Eviction was coming off a win at the ungraded La Longrette at WO in which she defeated one of the runners in the BC Distaff down at KEE today. It was a small field, and Eviction had a six pound weight advantage, so perhaps some people needed a little more convincing as to how good she may become. She’s a late bloomer, but is showing a great nose for the wire as her three year old campaign finishes up. This win will be her signature win of her career at the current point in time, and it comes on a day where BC races were running at another race track. With this win, and continued progress, Eviction may be running in the Breeders Cup next year. For now though, we’ll turn the alarm back and not move the clock forward. It is the third win in her last six starts and it is the first time that Mb Stables has won this stake. With most regular BEL jockeys at KEE, L Saez got a chance to ride a graded winner at BEL this time. Let’s take a look at this perfect numeric order finish!
1st- 1- Eviction (5/2)- Our eventual race winner form Mb Stables got off to a rather average start, being content to ride the rail about three lengths off the lead. Maintained this position for about the halfway portion of the backstretch, and then L Saez looked to try to move her closer to the front. The gap had closed to two lengths heading into the turn, and by about another half length midway into it when Saez realized he would have to relinquish his position along the rail. He moved her three wide, and Eviction was up to the task, pulling even to the leaders rather quickly once the move was made, and had them passed before they reached the top of the stretch. At this point, she had daylight in front of her and the wire. Living Dead Girl and Barbaresca had tired out, and Secret Sector simply did not have it today. Sonoma made sure she stayed in good stride, but Eviction was not going to be denied here today. The time of the victory was 1:41.35, the second fastest running in the stake’s history. Congratulations to winning trainer Mb Stables and jockey L Saez! Eviction is a three year old filly by Holy Trinity and out of Spanish Violation (by Spanish Force). She was bred in California by Mb Stables, the only trainer in which she has ever known!
2nd- 2- Sonoma (7/2)- As is usually the case with the Alabarda Stable filly, Sonoma was not terribly interested in running up close to the pace, and could see them all early but with a sensible gap to the leaders. J Lezcano looked to move her forward as the run into the turn began, and she would make steady progress. Unfortunately, she had a bit of a wall in front of her as they reached the exit of the turn, and she couldn’t make the same wide move that Eviction made, because Secret Sector was in that lane. In the stretch, the tiring Barbaresca moved off the rail, and Sonoma pounced right on it. She ran great once she had room, and was an emphatic second at the end.
3rd- 3- Secret Sector (4/1)- In her effort to repeat as Turn Back The Alarm champion, Secret Sector had a pretty good start, stalking the two leaders by about two lengths early on for Hawaiian Shirt Guy. Lost some ground to Eviction midway through the backstretch, but picked it back up over the course of the turn. Seemed to be comfortable running her type of race, and at the top of the stretch, it looked as though she might be in good position. However, she came up flat when it was time for to make a move. She wasn’t terrible, there was simply no response.
4th- 4- Barbaresca (372/1)- There were not many in the stands who believed in Chili King Stables entry to make a surface transition to dirt. Although those that did were screaming like they were about to become millionaires as she set the early fractions, which were :23.36 for a quarter and :46.90 for a half. Ran well into the turn, but once Evicton made the pass for the lead, Barbaresca seemed to lose interest, and would drop back in an almost synchronized stride with Living Dead Girl, making it fitting that they technically had a dead heat between the two of them.
5th- 5- Living Dead Girl (1/1)- The post time favorite from Team 7 Illusions, as well as our pick will have a lot of explaining to do, although the trainer is too busy celebrating a BC Distaff win right now to do so. Early on, it didn’t seem to bad as she stayed right to the outside of the pacesetting Barbaresca for the entire duration of the backstretch and into the turn. Was in decent shape, but as they reached the top of the stretch, Living Dead Girl decided she was done racing today.
