Extreme Jet Thoroughly Dominates The Remsen

The Remsen (Grade 2) (KYD)- $250.000 Purse
AQU- For Two Year Olds
One Mile and One Eighth on the Dirt
December 7, 2024

There is still five months until the KYD, but for now we can have some fun with predicting who the top contenders will be. In looking at the Remsen, a race that did end up having several KYD runners in it last year, including the winner, Extreme Jet, at the very least sent a message that we need to remember his name. The gelding had run fourth in the BC Juvenile last month, but was sold from one power stable to another, going from Fractious to Mb Stables, for $800.000. In the silks of Mb, Extreme Jet flew away from the competition with a four length win in the Remsen, going wire to wire. This is the second win in the Remsen for Mb Stables, who also won in 2021 with the late Dwindle. J R Velazquez now has four Remsen trophies and wins the race in back-to-back years. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:47.49, topping the previous stake record by nearly half a second. Let’s take a look at it:

(½ Mile- :47.05)- Right from the start, our eventual winner from Mb Stables, Extreme Jet, takes off out of the gate and grabs the early advantage. Two horses try to run with him initially, one being the Our Athletes- trained Western Knight to his inside, and then right beside him Domestic Product tries the same for D J C Racing Stables. As they enter the backstretch, Extreme Jet is able to pull a full length ahead of Domestic Product, and Western Knight settles into that one’s inside. Behind those two, we have a group of three consisting of Sky Diver (Crocker Ggs), Inoue (Royalty Stables), and Rave (Waldo), who had drawn in off the also-eligible list. Save A Horse (Martyparty) is a length behind them, then we have a gap to the rest of the field, who all run alongside one another. From inside to outside, this is Rolling Pin (Lemax Farms), Beer On Point (Night Rider Stables), Turning Point (TwinTowersRacing), and Nonchalant (Mo Mentum Farm).

(3/4 Mile- 1:10.98)- Down the backstretch, Extreme Jet continues to run very well and is able to pull away further from Domestic Product and Western Knight. Moving into the turn, this gap only seemed to increase more and more. Domestic Product and Western Knight were now caught by the likes on Inoue and Sky Dancer, and Inoue has a good lane to work with in the turn, so if there is any let up in Extreme Jet, he would like to have the first run at him. Rave was struggling a little to keep up, and Save A Horse had not shown much yet. Of those further back, Turning Point was showing some interest, but the same could not be said for the three back there.

(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- At this point, we were all aware we were watching a dominant performance by Extreme Jet. He would round the turn with ease, and would enter the stretch with a commanding five length advantage. Perhaps those who bet on others were still hoping that the post-time favorite would tire rapidly, but Extreme Jet showed no signs of that. Meanwhile, Inoue was merely still three wide with Domestic Product and Western Knight, so while that would be interesting for the exacta, he did not seem like a threat to the leader. Not much to speak of further back, but there was time for other to make a move with a chance of still hitting the board.

(Finish- 1:47.49)- Sit back and watch, because that was all that there was left to do! Extreme Jet took the lead right from the gate, extended the advantage in the backstretch, looked great in the turn, and continued to run well all the way to the wire. This is nearly a flawless performance, and as mentioned, he breaks the stake record by almost half a second. Inoue does end up finishing second, and from that point, it’s just a matter of being the best of the rest. That will be Save A Horse over Turning Point and Western Knight, with the rest of the order being Sky Diver, Domestic Product, Nonchalant, Beer On Point, Rolling Pin, and Rave.

About The Winner- Extreme Jet, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by J R Velazquez, is a two-year-old gelding by Con Will Con, and is out of Extreme Warrior. He was bred by Arkansas Elite as a first quarter two-year-old in Florida and was acquired by Mb Stables from Fractious last month for $800.000 in private sales. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in four starts and second graded win. His career earnings are now $415.400.
