Mb Stables keeps rolling along once again this season as he would add stakes title number ten, and go on to capture two more title to bring his total for the year to 12. He sits four ahead of Nakamura Stables and five in front of Aer Stables.
- Stall Memorial Stakes- Purse $100.000
- Fair Grounds Race Course- Fillies & Mares Four Years old and Up
- One Mile and one sixteenth- Turf track
While Fill The Void usually is sent out with a midpack or stalking style of running in her past affairs, the four year old chestnut with the help of long time trainer favorite Bejarano decided to try the front end for a switch. With the first three fractional times posting in 23 and four, 23 and three and then 23 and one, it was obvious that Fill The Void’s rider was just bringing her along progressively, and far enough in front to stay off any late runners. While she would only win by the narrow margin of a quarter of a length over an amazing closing effort from the 190-1 odds French Box ( Threshold ), it was a determined Fill The Void who would find the wire first. This victory is now her fourth win of her career, and she has an impressive ten starts, with a ( 4-4-1 ) record.
SRF writer Stu had to be over the moon with the efforts of French Box in this event. Never looking like she was going to fire at all come the far turn, this was the bay fillies third straight stakes try at the mile and a sixteenth distance, and her best effort ever. It should be obvious that what ever instructions were sent out with rider Gaffalione should be tucked away for future reference. She would complete a $440.900 exacta payout for her backers, and with the help of third place finisher Bloodthirst ( Nakamura Stables ), aid in completing a $1,041.300 trifecta. She may need to stretch out to the nine panel distance to be effective as a winner.
Bloodthirst would find staying tight with the eventual winner may have had a bearing on her slipping late and finishing third. She definitely will benefit from a slightly shorter distance in her next go around, and we should see her post some more top three efforts this season.
Minor share of the purse money went to Diablo Diablo’s Light The Fuse who still remains winless at the stakes level since her Cardinal Handicap victory. She needs a victory soon.
