Copper Top Futurity ($130.000 Purse)
SUN- For Two Year Olds foaled in NM
Four and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
April 21, 2020
In the first two year old stake of the year, it would be the ladies running the show. The Copper Top Futurity, which is an open race, had three of its original eleven entrants be fillies, and they would end up in the top two spots at the end of the race. The race would have one scratch, which was In A Major Way. That horse was one of our top two picks in the preview, but was going to be starting from the outside post. This left us with a field of ten, and at the end of four and a half furlongs, Dolly G would pull off the win. She was one of three entrants in the field from Gustafson Stable, so they see their commitment to the race become rewarded. It’s the first time that they have won the race, and that is also true for the jockey, F Arrieta. Congratulations to them! It is the second time in the last three years that the race was won by a filly, and the race was won in a time of :51.85. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.32)- Phunny Capo is the quickest out of the gate, for her trainer, Asgar, and she leads the way into the opening turn. The other quick starters would also be the other two horses that ultimately finished in the top three spots. Amazing Twizt was almost as quick as his stablemate, and running to his inside would be our eventual winner, Dolly G, from Gustafson Stable. Those two, as well as Night Rider Stables’ first time starter, Tang, would trail Phunny Capo by about a length and a half after the first two furlongs. Stalking the stalkers, we had the third filly, The Great Enabler running in the second lane for Drabfantasy. She had Phoneys Nightmare (Hawaiian Shirt Guy) to her inside, and Darwin G (Gustafson Stable) to her outside. The other three horses in this race were left behind at the start, as there was nearly a four length gap back to them. Grand Roi and stablemate Roi Of Sunshine (Stone Creek Farm) were back there, along with Deal G (Gustafson Stable).
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Completing the turn, and moving into the stretch, Phunny Capo was looking very comfortable on the front end. She was still in the clear, and enjoyed a length lead over her closest pursuers, which were still Dolly G and Amazing Twizt. Those two were positioned well to her inside for a run if they had it in them. Tang fell back into the clutches of The Great Enabler another length back, and it was more length to Phoneys Nightmare and Darwin G. The rest were too far back to threaten for a win at this point, but would still hope to finish the race off well.
(Finish- :51.85)- In the stretch, Dolly G would pull away from Amazing Twizt and now set her sights on Phunny Capo. That leader started to show signs of tiring as they approached the wire, and this made the job of Dolly G a little easier as she wins by a length over a four horse photo for second. Phunny Capo did enough to prevail in that photo, getting the edge over Amazing Twizt and fourth place Darwin G, who ran quite well in the stretch. The most impressive runner at that point was Deal G, who flew through the field, and will look to not concede so much ground early on so that kick is not all for not in the future. The Great Enabler and Tang are a length behind that. Rounding out the order, its Grand Roi, Phoneys Nightmare, and Roi of Sunshine.
About The Winner- Dolly G, trained by Gustafson Stable and ridden to victory is a two year old filly by Roebuck, and is out of Poolside Panther. She was bred in New Mexico by Gustafson Stable as a yearling. Congratulations to them! Her career earnings at this early point in her career are $78.000.
