The GP Oaks – Grade II [KYO]
1 1/16 Mile Dirt Stake Purse $250.000 Filly 3 Year Olds.
1st Fire Chief Bigking Ortiz I Jr
One length cannot be considered a clear-cut win in most books but considering there was less than that between the next six home this is about as clear cut as it gets here at HRP. Back to the surface that saw her only wins, she looked at home stalking the pace and when asked readily went about her business and stole enough of a break to hold the closers at bay. This is a great $16.000 claim for the owner and with the way she won this today they must fancy their chances of another upset come the KYO. Bred by Team 7 Illusions, she has seen plenty of movement up her improvement curve this year and looks to have hit the highs at the right time.
2nd Give Up On Style Asgar Wilson E J
It’s a common sight to see a horse catch a break while all the closers are waiting for their moment which inevitably comes too late. This one was taken a mile back to trail the field for much of the race and finished like a train for second just getting the best of a six-way photo. Normally we would be putting this home bred straight into the black book for next time and if she can get the timing right you would have to say she was clocking the fastest sectionals over the final two furlongs today and would’ve won had she started her run a furlong earlier.
3rd Ride With An Edge Mb Stables Ortiz J L
Sat with the closers waiting for the right moment and along with half the field chose the wrong moment. She didn’t come from as far back as Give Up O Style but it wasn’t by much and she too will be going into the black book if the trainer can find a jockey to get the timing right.
4th Scrumdiddlyumptious La Canada Racehorses Bridgmohan S X
I could easily have just said ditto for pretty much everything behind the winner as this was another that sat back and let the winner win before she really got going. This was a much better run than she had in the Honeybee so she is showing the much-needed improvement, but I fear it will be too late for the KYO.
