Eventually, Forty Two was bound to win one of these NY-bred stakes that he has been trying, and finally that time has come. After close calls at FL, SAR, and previously here at BEL, the 5th time proved to be the charm. It’s his first win since breaking his maiden, as well. He had been on good form coming into the race, and now we get to see how he will be able to build on it. The proud winning trainer is Team 7 Illusions, and perhaps it is fitting that he wins in his 6th try with the horse. (7 x 6= 42). It’s his first win in the stake, and for jockey J J Castellano, it is win number two. The time of the race was 1:39.64, the second quickest among the races run at this distance. Congratulations to them! Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :23.85)- Breaking well out of the gate were the race winner, Forty Two, from Team 7 Illusions, and Perspective, out of Hambletonian Stable. These two have a decent battle to try and determine which one would be the early leader, and it would be Forty Two, officially at a quarter mile. Highest Esteem sits in a reasonable stalking position between them for Axeman, with American Horror also within two lengths, while along the rail, for D J C Racing Stables. Trailing is Pain, from John Henry, though he is only three lengths out.
(½ Mile- :47.34)- During this portion of the race, the field gets spread out just a little bit more. This is due to a combination of Forty Two continuing to look good on the front end, and Perspective beginning to fade out of contention prematurely. Highest Esteem also loses a couple lengths over the backstretch, and has fallen to fourth. American Horror maintained his steady stride, but did not cut into the lead. Pain also lost two lengths to now be five out of it.
(Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Put in the books as being the end of the, chances, for the rest of the field. Forty Two has simply begun to run away with it, handling the turn with ease and opening up by over three lengths. The only question now was going to be how much the margin of victory was going to be as Forty Two would not be denied today. American Horror was second, but back by three and seemingly content to hold his position and not make a push at the lead. Pain had become third, but still had five lengths to make up. While second seemed probable for him, Forty Two was long gone. Highest Esteem and Perspective did not look good.
(Finish- 1:39.64)- Forty Two finally picks up his second career win, as J J Castellano is able to have him in cruise control. Pain runs well in the stretch to be a runaway second, but still is beaten by two and a half lengths. It’s another length to third place American Horror. Highest Esteem is fourth and Perspective eventually finished as well.
About the winner: Forty Two, trained by Team 7 Illusions and ridden by J J Castellano, is a three year old colt by Z Jinxed One, and out of Cannoli. He was bred in New York by Night Mare Racing, and acquired by Team 7 Illusions via private sales in May of this year for $100.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win was his second in 14 starts, and his career earnings now sit at $253.310.
