Frozen Mist Prevails in Captiva Island Catfight

Captiva Island
$125.000 For Fillies And Mares Four Years Old And Upwards
5 Furlongs – Turf
Gulfstream Park – March 14, 2026

The older filly and mare turf sprint division gets a little bit ignored and my guess is it’s because there is no separate BC race for them. The dirt fillies get their own sprint race, but the speedy lawn ladies (grass gals?) don’t. It may be that lack of a BC race or a hole in the schedule but, whatever the reason, the Captiva Island and its $125.000 pulled in a top-notch field and the most accomplished fillies in the group were the ones who flashed under the wire to take the checks. None of the top three deserved to lose after a start to finish catfight that could have been won by any of them.

Winner: Frozen Mist (Maxmillion Farm/N. Juarez) Thoughtful Idea/Ice Angel (No Way Dude) Went forward out of the gate to challenge for the lead in a five-way fight. Went forward and shook free with Shine To Class and Stellar Strength and those three battled to the wire. Gained the advantage from her two rivals late and prevailed by a neck. Well fought and well earned.

Second (DH): Shine To Class (Our Athletes/Mario Gutierrez) Welcome To Class/Sunday Dress (Lord High Admiral) Ran the same race as the winner and just missed taking the win. The top three battled from start to finish. Valiant effort to be bested at the wire.

Second (DH): Stellar Strength (Mb Stables/E.J. Zayas) Neon Wolf/Storm Allied (Cherokee Sunset) Was part of the three-way battle and had the worst of it as far as track position and having to cover the most ground. Dead heated for second barely losing by a neck.

Fourth: Jean From Winter Pen (Big Jd Racing/L. Salles) Hardline/F B I Open Up (Forestry) Ran a game fourth in a good first effort for her new barn after being purchased privately for $100.000. Was last entering the stretch and made steady progress and was moving best of all at the end.

Preview Pick: Mo Ki Mo Finished eighth. Sat at the back of the field and never made much of a run at any point.

This was the first Captiva Island win for both Maxmillion Farm and jockey N. Juarez. It was the second stakes win for Frozen Mist and the $75.000 winners share of the purse boosts her career earnings to $1,660.690.
