Full Field of Fourteen for The JC Gold Cup at SAR

9/2/22

8  SAR    The JC Gold Cup (GI) [BC]

      $1,250.000       3yo&Up         1 1/4  Dirt         124lbs

The days are getting shorter, summer is coming to a close and the SAR Meet is winding down, but it’s a big weekend of stakes action and none bigger than The JC Gold Cup (GI) for the handicap gents, and it comes with ramifications to head towards Lexington this fall.  I’m probably chalky in my selections but let’s put Eclipse My Knowledge in the top spot.  He’s super consistent, and I did do a bit of cheating off of The Green Card’s selections, as few horses hit as high as he did on that system.  Sports Page is another that has been hitting on all cylinders and seems to be in the hunt in every single race.  I think these two make for a strong exacta pairing.

Here’s The Field –

1
   Locamotive    Aer Stables    Bridgmohan S X   124   10/1

’22 has been a struggle as he’s still looking for his first win of the year, but you have to keep an eye on him because you don’t win $1.8 by sitting at the free track.  Could this be a spot for him to get back on track?  (sorry… pardon the pun)

2
   Charleys Latte    Fractious    Saez L   124   8/1

Woke up big time last out as he was having a tough time this season until that big win in the Whitney (GI) over this surface.  Can he keep that momentum going and make it two in a row?  He’s won a ton of money, so don’t count him out.

3
He Needsa Manzillian    Mo Mentum Farm    Silvera Ru   124   7/1

Won his first start of the season, which was his first start for this barn, then went on a streak of up/down races, but won last out taking the WV Governors (GIII) at MNR.  He also seems to have a liking for the wet surface, so watch that.

4
Eclipse My Knowledge    Nakamura Stables    Luzzi L J   124   5/1

Won his third race of the season last out, taking the MTH Cup (GIII) and that was his second graded win of the season, to book-end with his OP Mile (GIII) victory.  He’s banked some serious cash through his career, and it looks like he’s ready for this one.

5
Tempestuous    Mb Stables    Garcia Mar   124   10/1

Was rolling along, having a very nice season, but his last two have been questionable, at best.  He won the Alysheba (GII) for his third win of the season (including the SA Hcp) but was eighth as the favorite in the Suburban (GII) and then a dismal tenth in the Whitney (GI).  Can he relight the fire?

6
Jolly Rook    Angelos Stable    Franco M   124   6/1

Won three races early, then has three third in his last three starts, almost all of them at the graded layer.  With tin wins from thirty-three starts at this level, you know he can get the job done… give him a big look today.

7
Sports Page    John Henry    Van Dyke D   124   4/1

Very consistent type that is in the thick of things every time he goes to the post.  He shows five on the board races from six starts this season and won the Gold Cup (GI) at SA prior to those two thirds in the Foster (GII) and the Whitney (GI).

8
   Sensei    Mb Stables    Cedillo A   124   8/1

Has four starts for the big stables since the private purchase showing a win vs. high-end Alw foes and a pair of seconds that includes that last out solid performance in the Suburban (GII) at BEL.  He could be dangerous.

9
Come To Poppa    South Shore Stables    Velazquez J R   120   10/1

Hasn’t won since early in the season while on the TC Trail, which resulted in an eighteenth in the KYD (GI) and an eighth in the PRK (GI), but he did show some life last out with a fourth in the Crosby (GI) after setting the early pace in that one.  They stretch him out again, which is interesting.

10
   Need 4 Speed    Nakamura Stables    Murrill M   124   12/1

Has a pair of wins this season including when he was tagged out of that last race for $62.500.  Now, he has some back class, so I’m not surprised that there was a 2-way shake for this one, but they are going right after the gusto looking at this field.

11
Day Of Black    Night Rider Stables    Geroux F   124   12/1

Back to back wins for his two seasonal scores, taking down high-end Alw types at WO and then took the Commentator vs NY-bred stakes types.  This is an obvious step up in class, but he did close fast in that fourth-place finish in the SD Hcp (GII) in his most recent.

12
   Stolen    D J C Racing Stables    Lopez P   124   12/1

Won the Brooklyn (GII) two back, but he may be a marathon type of a horse as he closed to be fourth in the Suburban (GII) and then again to be eighth in the Whitney (GI), so the longer distance may be more to his liking.

13
   Sunderland Til I Die    TwinTowersRacing    Gaffalione T   124   12/1

Won the Stymie Mile back in Feb, and it’s been tough since.  He was third in the OP Mile (GIII) and again in the Suburban (GII), so maybe he gets in this one for part of the prize… or could he pull the upset?

14
   Safer Dab    Gdp Inc    Ferrer J C   124   10/1

Won an Alw race at SA to get his season started, then woke up again last out to take the Alydar over this surface.  He’s another that looks to love the wet surface, so they may be doing a rain dance before this starts.
