As the last stop on the 2022 KYO trail, the G3 Beaumont brought the prep season to a close on Sunday. It was Spearmint Rhino that came out on top in the $400.000 7-furlong Sunday feature at KEE. Completing her journey in 1:21.89, Spearmint Rhino now has three wins from just five starts and a bankroll that now stands at $399.000.
Spearmint Rhino got away from stall eight in good order and quickly took up a four-wide stalking position as Bronze Freak raced loose on the lead. As Bronze Freak was completing the quarter mile in :23.34, Spearmint Rhino was able to clear her three companions in the 2nd flight and was a solo 2nd just two lengths off of the leader. The Arindel filly maintained her course in Bronze Freak’s hoofprints until tipping-out ever so slightly as the leader put up a :46.53 half-mile split.
Spearmint Rhino began reducing her deficit through the latter stages of the turn, and she was only a length behind Bronze Freak as they entered the stretch. At the same time as the eventual winner was beginning to apply real pressure on the leader, Jenga was in the midst of what appeared to be a powerful move into contention. Bronze Freak led to post a 1:10.01 six-furlong split, but Spearmint Rhino made the pass soon after they passed the furlong marker. Jenga was continuing her rally and Canadian Flight was hitting her best stride as well. Spearmint Rhino was able to hold off Jenga by a length at the wire and the latter was a length in front of Bronze Freak. The half-length between Bronze Freak and 4th-placed Canadian Flight was enough to ensure that the show filly, if the connections choose to do so, would be in the starting gate for next month’s G1 KYO. Completing the order of finish were Neigh Kid, Derby Ghost Party, Wicked Ways, and Coconut Milk.
Congratulations to Spearmint Rhino and Arindel on their victory in the G3 Beaumont with a tip of the cap to Bronze Freak and her trainer, Asgar, for qualifying for the G1 KYO!
