5 AQU The Gotham Mile (GIII) [KYD]
$300.000 1Mile Dirt 3yo 122lbs
To the Big Apple and we check out some TC hopefuls pushing up the ladder to Louisville, and the gate will be full for The Gotham Mile (GIII), and there are some real interesting story lines in this one. A few are making their first start since changing hands, a few have been finding traffic issues and a few look like they are ready to move on to big, big races. So, it’s time to do the sorting.
I’ll take Obi Wan as the top pick today, this one running very well for the prior owner, but really… is there anyone better than Mb Stables? This one was second in the BC Juv, same in the KY Jockey Club (GII) at CD and then was sixth in the Southwest (GIII) at OP. He also won the Champagne (GI) over this track, so the home cookin’ is also a bonus.
Let’s give Mystic Freak Party a big chance today. That one making his fourth start since the private sale, but two of those races are wins including the San Vincent (GII) at SA, last out. If he runs back to that race, I think he will be a real handful and could actually be the one to beat.
I’ll stay on the outside part of the starting gate and take Dunked On Shambo as the third choice. Another Mb Stables charge, he was second in the Withers (GIII) and did break maiden over this oval, so he is another that may relish the home field advantage. This barn always runs big in the TC preps, and no reason to ignore this gelding.
It’s going to be another big weekend of racing, and we should certainly get a good spot to take this one in.
