Dixie Stakes Ended Up Being an “Awesome” Affair

While Seminole and Lets Do It Big Boy were scratched from the running of this years race, all the better for TwinTowersRacing’s Oh Awesome One, as the seven year old chestnut proved he still has what it takes to compete, finding himself heading to the winners enclosure, and not being sent off to pasture.

  • Dixie Stakes- Grade II Purse $250.000

  • Mile and a sixteenth – Turf Course

In what probably has seemed like a hitting a brick wall effort for Tommy of TwinTowerRacing, getting this kind of effort back again into this sawbuck purchase just last November has paid off. Sometimes a trainer has to go with his gut and have the patience to work hard to get the best out of a thoroughbred. He did just that.

While Mean Street ( Nakamura Stables ) would hit the line for the first time ahead of Jakers Delight ( Nolespan Racing ) to his inside, Oh Awesome One was content on his rail position some three lengths back in fifth.

Rounding the Clubhouse turn and hitting the backstretch, and now Jakers Delight had broken away to a two length lead ahead of Mean Street. Green Rush ( Pennville Farm ) was staying in pace with the early goers in third. Never Met Me ( Mb Stables ) was placed in fourth, with Oh Awesome One still tight to the rail in fifth. The early trailer would be Bold Glitter ( Estero Farms ).

After fractions of 23.69 and 46 and four, Jakers Delight was still in command by a little over two lengths. Mean Street was still hanging on to second, but he was now joined by Never Met Me, splitting between him and Green Rush. Oh Awesome One was now starting to pick up the pace.

As the field hit the eighth pole, it was turning into an all out run for home. Never Met Me was now alongside the frontrunner, while to their inside a length back, was Mean Street and Oh Awesome One head to head. Three quarter time was posted in 1:09.97.

Looking like he was out on top with a clear shot at a victory, Never Met Me was clear of Jakers Delight and full of run. But so was Oh Awesome One. He would manage to break the tape first in a final time of 1:39.55, a half length better then Never Met Me. Jakers Delight would hang for the show purse, with Mean Street would claim the final share. Green Rush was fifth just two lengths shy, while Bold Glitter was never able to advance on his position.

Finally to comment lastly about Oh Awesome One, against Graded Stakes company during his career, he has a record of 27 starts ( 5-2-5-1 ) with wins in the Gr. III Fleet Sprint Hdcp, Gr. III Bold Venture, Gr. II Kennedy Road, Gr. III Midnight Lute and now the Dixie. The question I ask is when do you final say its time to hang it up? He’s been under the watchful eye of five talented trainers in his career, and has now found new life with TwinTowersRacing. It kind of reminds me of an old M.A.S.H. episode where Captain Dupree gets transferred from the 8063 ( It rhymes) when in it he says ” I found me a home!! ” I guess Oh Awesome One has found one as well.
