Well, I billed this as the Pre BC BC and it ended up with the sort of odd-looking result that will send shivers down the spines of all those that are holding onto the early favorites. This four-year-old was stuck out in the car park and with his only ever stakes win coming in a state bred stakes race as a three-year-old he didn’t on paper look to have much chance at all. When he used the wide gate to go up on the lead at a swift early pace it looked like he was going to be the fall guy as the long KD turn pushed him hard to get into one off the rail. But from somewhere other than any past performances he pulled off the gutsiest display I have seen in a long time and just kept on going and going until he went under the wire a nose winner. This was a remarkable performance from the trainer who pulled off a few of those today and they must have been waiting like the rest of us for the horse to weaken, he just never did. He will certainly sleep well tonight as the owner wonders what to do with the money they earned today.

If the winner was a surprise, then this one was too as his previous wins over a sprint trip had been at allowance level and we are more used to seeing him over the mile these days. But at least he is a grade one winner, so we knew he had the class, and his running style said he was going to be on speed and that is exactly where he ended up. I must admit with his ability over the mile and the winner running hard from the wide gate I expected him to pull away down the short stretch but though he battled hard he just could not put away Grayte Agent. In the end he had to settle for a very narrow second, a great result, but I am sure the owner will be thinking about what could’ve been.

The two stables that had a great day at KD today were first and third here with this one flying home for third and had this race been six and a half furlongs you would have to say he would’ve been the winner. That closing style is so hard to get right on this engine, but he very nearly did and bearing in mind this was only his third ever race on turf and his best finish so far, well he just adds to what looks like a rather odd result.

These sprint races are always about noses and necks and a few noses and necks behind was the BC Sprint favorite who could only manage fourth. To be fair to him his winning streak had to come to an end some time, it’s pretty unusual at HRP to run up a sequence at this level so his run of six wins was pretty amazing. He lost nothing in defeat, this race could be run another ten times and there would be ten different results as barely a length covered a majority of the field. I think he must still be the one to beat in the BC but with the winning streak broken there is hope for his rivals in November.
