Grey Wind Runs Big in Dogwood

September 23, 2015

The complexion of the Grade III Dogwood at CD changed completely when the skies opened up on Saturday afternoon and Grey Wind used her front running speed to wire the field of three-year-old fillies and score her second straight win in stakes company. A daughter of Pink Panther, from a mare who has produced another Grade III winning filly in Rock Dies Happy, she now has four wins to her credit and more than $200.000 in earnings with the chance for more at either BEL or here over this course in a few weeks time.

The sloppy conditions at CD saw many of the field take back early but both Grey Wind (1.60) and Bizz (10.30) broke sharply and were the early leaders out of the chute, and three-lengths clear of the rest through the opening split of 23.64. As they battled up front through tough fractions for the track, stablemates Highly Doubted (*1.10) and Hidden Hollywood (12.55) hung Jazzmin (4.90) out wide and that was tough for her into the far turn, and she was forced to tuck inside to save some ground. Grey Wind finally started to put away Bizz on the outside through a half-mile in 47.86 and found herself nearly a length to the good at the head of the lane but Jazzmin was resurgent on the outside and started to close, making for an exciting final couple of furlongs. As the leader strained for the wire, Hidden Hollywood tried to move inside while Jazzmin was outside around a tiring Bizz and with a 1/16th to go, Grey Wind was still two-lengths in front with a widening margin. Straight and strong through slowing splits, the wire-to-wire winner was able to hold off Jazzmin by a half-length with Highly Doubted coming on for third, Bizz tiring to fourth and Hidden Hollywood finding the conditions too taxing late in an even fifth, while less than two-lengths from victory.

Since being purchased for a solid $80.000 back in May, Grey Wind has done nothing but earn money and with this win in the Grade III Dogwood, now boasts three victories for her current connections including two in open company. A race like the Iroquois could be a good stepping stone for her, especially while back in restricted company, although the Grade II Raven Run might be more fitting as the best of the division will be at KEE two-weeks later for the BC F&M Sprint.

Congratulations goes out to owner Drabfantasy and their three-year-old filly Grey Wind, a front running winner of the Grade III Dogwood at CD!
