The TC races may have come to an end here at BEL last weekend, but the racing carries on! In the Dancing Renee, older females that call the Empire State their home will get a chance to win a share of a respectable purse in a six furlong sprint. It is the seventh time that the race has been run, but reverses its history a little bit. The very first race was also for four and up, but after that the next five races allowed three year olds into the stake. Now, the younger horses have been kicked out, and it will be just the older females once again. Last year, five year old Immortal Steel was the winner, doing so for Wolf Ridge Stables, and she will be back in an attempt to be the first horse to win this race two times. She will meet four other competitors, so let’s take a look at our field!
#1- Frenched Sorrow (Ace Racing Stable, ridden by J Lezcano)- After being picked up in a $10.000 claimer, the trainer immediately increased the level of competition for Frenched Sorrow, and that resulted in two runner up finishes in NY-bred stakes to start off this year. With just a little more luck with the headbob at the wire, each could have been a win. However, the last two races have not seen that continue with two very flat looking race lines. She cuts her distance here somewhat, and perhaps that can help a ton.
#2- Z Laffy One (Ace Racing Stable, ridden by J Alvarado)- Ace will have two horses in this race, and they start side by side! She is one of three horses in the field that just raced here on Memorial Day. Though with two others running the Critical Eye, Z Laffy One was on the grass for the Mount Vernon. It is the surface she has been running on since October 2018, but after a couple of mediocre races, it is time to change things up. There might not be enough data for an outsider to really look at how she might fate on the main track, but it could work out quite well from what I do see.
#3- Immortal Steel (Wolf Ridge Stable, ridden by K Carmouche)- Last year, Immortal Steel earned the win in this race, and since then she has made a lot of frequent trips to NY-bred stakes. She has been productive in them, but has only managed one more win since last year’s Dancing Renee. Last time, she was also pretty well rested, but this time will need to perform well on just two weeks of rest. In this field though, there are two others that are doing the same, so that might not be an issue at all. She tried going a mile last time in the Critical Eye, and it did not work out, so here it be back to sprinting, where she has had the majority of her success.
#4- Spicy Junction (Arindel, ridden by M Franco)- She will also be coming out of the Critical Eye, and finished one spot behind Immortal Steel in that race. Of course, in that, we are talking about sixth and seventh place finishes. Spicy Junction has been a little more comfortable with the mile distance of the Critical Eye in her most recent races, but last year did quite well while sprinting. The filly seems to have picked up a habit of either winning, or finishing third, but should stand a good chance here to take the top spot.
#5- Gold Futures (TwinTowersRacing, ridden by D Davis)- Unlike the others in this field, Gold Futures has not spent a lot of time running with the NY-bred condition. One thing she has never done, however, is run in a dirt sprint. She’s tried a few on the grass, including the $125.00 License Fee in her last start (where she was fifth), but when she has tried the main track it has always been going at least a mile. Nothing wrong with trying a little something new, and it does seem like she takes a liking to every type of race she has been in so far, so I don’t see why this race would be any different.
