BC Turf Sprint (Grade 1)- $1,000.000 Purse
DMR- For Three Year Olds and Upward
Five Furlongs on the Turf
November 1, 2025
The BC Turf Sprint is not the biggest race on the BC schedule this weekend, and turf sprinters often go under the radar in comparison to their counterparts that want to run longer or do it on the main track. That does not mean their achievements should not be celebrated, and on Saturday fourteen of the best at what they do will be heading to the starting gate. Within our field, we will have two fillies, including one who attracted a lot of attention at the start of the year as a KYO hopeful. Others in this field have been among the best at this for quite some time and will look to add a BC win to their resume. Last year, we saw Soviet Mig and J Lezcano pick up the victory for Lanfranco Stable right here. Soviet Mig has been lightly raced since the win, making just four starts and only three of them happening this year. None of them have resulted in a win. Jamfest is the only two-time winner of the BC Turf Sprint, accomplishing that in 2014 and 2015 for Jkk Racing Stables. Let’s take a look now at our fourteen participants:
1- Spin Zone (Mb Stables, ridden by I Ortiz Jr)- After becoming committed to turf sprints this spring, Spin Zone began to show his true potential. He’s won three stakes in total that are turf sprints, and two of them have come in his last three races that are not the WO Mile. His victories at SAR in both the Quick Call and the Mahony over the summer is what got him into the BC. For good measure, he also finished second last time out in the Grade 2 Woodford at KEE. He ended up being seventh on the BC Turf Sprint points leaderboard, with twelve.
2- Mosquito (Spankys Barn, ridden by Hector Barrios)- He may be named after an insect, but the 126 pounds that he will carry is more than several of these, although a little more than half of the field will carry that weight. Mosquito was only 21st on the leaderboard for this race, but that did not stop him from getting in. He’s won two stakes on the year, with his biggest victory being the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes in June. He has only run once since then, and he did not pick up a check in the BEL Turf Sprint. Anything is possible, and Spankys Barn is a trainer that can sneak up on you, but this will not be one of my picks.
3- Exemplary (Mb Stables, ridden by P Lopez)- In his last four races, Exemplary has been a consistent seventh place finisher, doing so on three occasions. His better race within that period was a runner up performance in the Grade 2 Troy at SAR. For Exemplary to have a chance in this race, he is going to have to rediscover that form. The good news for him is that Mb Stables may be able to do exactly that. The Tactical colt was on better form during the spring and early summer, and he is actually on top of the BC Turf Sprint points board.
4- Sister Nancy (D J C Racing Stables, ridden by Mario Gutierrez)- Our first filly earned seven points for this race, placing her 15th on the leaderboard, which is good enough to get her in. She’s hit the board in half of her six races, but has only managed one victory along the way, coming in the Grade 2 Intercontinental at SAR in June. It’s her first time running against the boys, and she’ll carry three less pounds than most. Still seems like a longshot in this field.
5- Confident Elegance (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by S X Bridgmohan)- Our second filly saw her career get off to a great start, running and winning preps for the KYO and seemed to be one of the better options for the KYO itself. She would not run well in that race and would be sold to Maxmillion Farm rather affordably considering the prices of other superstar horses. After running on graded race with Maxmillion on the dirt, Confident Elegance was moved to the grass, and in sprints. She’s won one, and nearly two of those three starts, with the victory coming in the Grade 2 Franklin. Her sire, Declassified, will be watching closely from my barn.
6- Brit Style (Lemax Farms, ridden by A Fresu)- Brit Style has spent most of her career running at least a mile on the turf, and she generally represented herself well. However, in late August, Lemax Farms would shorten up her distance and run her in a sprint for the first time since May 2024. It would come in the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap, one of the three automatic qualifiers for this race. Brit Style stepped up and grabbed the win, to get this longtime trainer into the BC in search of his first such victory. I’ve been around for about the same length of time, and have a similar goose egg in my stats, so I can relate to the excitement level for this race that he feels. He ran fourth in the Eddie D Stakes last time out and is the one to root for if you want to back a smaller trainer. Don’t be turned off by him being down the points leaderboard a bit.
7- Last Way To The Beac (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by K Roman)- Lemax Farms also bred this one, but sold him very early in his career to Maxmillion Farm. The gelding has since gone on to have amazing career, earning over $4,000.000, and appearing in three previous BC races. This will be the third different BC race that Last Way To The Beac has been in, but he has not been able to do better than eighth in any of those previous races. After having to sit out the BC in 2024, the gelding saw his distances shortened, and he has gone on to win two of five this year. The Grade 2 Connaught Cup Stakes is his bigger victory. 13th on the points leaderboard for the race.
8- Bay Another Man (Our Athletes, ridden by J R Velazquez)- After being gelded around this time last year, Bay Another Man has hit the board in all nine of his starts. Third has been his most common finishing position, but when it came time to run at KD for the Grade 1, $2,000.000 Simpson Stakes, he showed that he can get the job done against the best in the business and not only complete a trifecta. For full disclosure, though, that was on soft turf, and Bay Another Man has always been a little better when it has been wet. This isn’t the best track to come to if you wouldn’t object to some rain, and firm turf is expected on Saturday.
9- Whoa Bo (Maxmillion Farm, ridden by D Z Gaskin)- Maxmillion Farm is known for having quality turf stars, and Whoa Bo will be his third entrant into this race. The BC Turf Sprint is a race that he has “only” won once this far, coming in 2022 with Cherokee Devil. Whoa Bo finished higher than his stablemates on the BC Turf Sprint leaderboard, placing eighth. A win in the Grade 2 Highlander Stakes from late June is his only trip to the winner’s circle this year, but he has hit the board in five of six. You can also say with him that third has been his most common finishing position. Very consistent with earning 100+ SRF’s.
10- Inoue (Royalty Stables, ridden by B Curtis)- In nine starts on the year, Inoue has just one win, and it came early, in the Cutler Bay from late March. That was his turf debut, and it would come after running in a few preps for the KYD. With one exception, he’s remained on the turf, and he’s similar to the two to his immediate inside in that he’s more of a horse that has hit the board this year rather than snagging victories. Second in the Grade 1 Simpson, which is a significant accomplishment, as well as in the Quick Call, and he was third in the Mahony. So, he’s usually with the leaders at the wire, and it may not take much for him to turn that around and finish on top.
11- Sorcerer (Mb Stables, ridden by G Corrales)- Here’s the third horse in the race from Mb Stables, as the trainer looks for his third BC Turf Sprint victory. His prior wins came in 2019 with Gleaming Spirit and in 2023 with Drinkin Creepin. Sorcerer isn’t as high up on the leaderboard as his stablemates but still did manage to finish 11th. He won the KD Turf Sprint in August, which was an automatic qualifier for this race. It was one of three wins for him on the year, but the only one that came at the stake level. He’s earned a 102 SRF in his last two races.
12- Bayldonite (The Sidley Stud, ridden by M Franco)- Last month, Bayldonite captured a win in the Grade 2 Neartic Stakes, in a dead heat, and the got him 14th on the BC Turf Sprint leaderboard. That victory came after a second place run here back in August in the Green Flash Handicap. Overall, he has two wins in seven starts this year, while hitting the board three times. While that can seem inconsistent, it’s more of a case of him hitting his best form starting in June. He’s one of three horses here that also ran in the BC Turf Sprint and he’ll hope to do better than his fifth from 2024.
13- Little Tiger (Ajm Stables, ridden by J Lezcano)- This is another small, but very productive stable, that looks to pick up their first career BC win. Little Tiger is a seven-year-old gelding, but interestingly, after making one start in 2021, he was idle until 2024. Arrived with Ajm Stables as a nice $85.000 Christmas present and immediately showcased his talents at the stake level with his new barn. Had one win and three seconds in his first four starts with Ajm, all stakes, with the win being the $125.000 Turf Dash, where he knocked off Exemplary along the way. That came in February, and if you want more recent achievements, we certainly have them here with two wins in his last three starts, including the Grade 2 Woodford at KEE over several of these. Second on the BC Turf Sprint. He’s a great story, considering how he started, that can become even greater with a win right here.
14- Teterboro (Chili King Stables, ridden by P Husbands)- Around this time last year, Teterboro was running in a $20.000 maiden claimer. He won the race, and Chili King Stables is grateful that no one claimed him away. The three-year-old began to find his way to this level over the spring, and hit the board in three straight stakes, including a second in the Grade 1 Jaipur. Finally got that stake win right after that in the $150.000 Dade Park Dash but has not been as strong in the two races that have followed. 20th on the leaderboard for this race, but that’s enough for him to get in. Likely will be one of the higher prices in the field.
Also Eligible: Wild Sprinter (Nakamura Stables)
Prediction: 1-9-13-8
