Classic distance, un-classic conditions and again, we can eliminate the LA-bred money, since none of these are from the Bayou state. We look at the full field of fourteen for the CC Jewel, a mile and an eighth main track test for horses that have started for $30.000 claimer in the 22/23 seasons, and there are some real nice horses in this group, while we keep the weights down to a manageable size.
How about I take a horse that hasn’t won in the 22/23 seasons as my top pick? Tehran fits that description as the Mb Stables trained gelding was third in the BC Dirt Mile (GI) but hasn’t had his picture taken since taking down starter Alw types at SA back on the last day of Dec 2021. Still, he’s been on the board in half of his eight ’23 starts, two seconds and two thirds, and he’s banked $600.000 along the way… nothing to blink at. He’s been close in his FG starts, and you know me and horses for courses. Let’s go right next door and put Pompano Beach in the middle of this… he’s changed hands quite a few hands, but Threshold plunked down $6.000, taking him out of a mile and a sixteen race at HST, then ran him back in The Forty Niner (GII) at AQU where he missed by a head at nearly 40/1 odds. I think they found lightning in a bottle, and he should be in the picture when they hit the wire.
