6 Furlongs Dirt Stake Purse $125.000 Filly & Mare 4 Year Olds And Up Foaled In NY.
1st Last Call YME Stable Velazquez J R
When she made all to win an optional claimer last time, she had to go much quicker through the final two furlongs than she did to win this stakes race, but that tends to be how it rolls these days and though she only had a half-length to spare at the line she never really looked like getting overtaken. Using the wide gate to pierce forward she didn’t get it all her own way and had to keep fighting for the lead all the way. Though she hasn’t been racing in black type this year she was fifth in last year’s BC Fillies and Mares Sprint, so we knew she had the class and today it was that class that saw her home.

Considering it wasn’t a fast pace, she did pretty well to close off as well as she did after traveling around mid-pack for much of the race. This was her 38th race, but she is still showing enough enthusiasm to be a chance in races like this going forward, even though she doesn’t win as often these days.

It often happens when horses that race over longer trips come to sprints, they go on pace early and are one paced at the end. Sure enough, that is what happened here either by race engine anomaly or the trainer’s choice of gaming buttons. In fairness it was a solid effort, and she was right there with a furlong to run, and you would think that she will continue to make her presence felt in this type of grade.

Got a bit too far back off just an average pace and as we know it is hard to make up ground on the new engine when that happens. It won’t be her ability that stops her winning black type, it will more likely be her favored closing running style.
