Jakarta Gets His Second Shoemaker Mile Victory

Shoemaker Mile (Grade 1)- $300.000 Purse
SA- For Three Year Olds and Upward
One Mile on the Turf
May 26, 2025

This year’s Shoemaker Mile would see a head-to-head battle between the last two winners of race as Jakarta (2023) and Electric Blue (2024) looked to win it again while taking on four others. After running a mile on the turf, it would be Jakarta going wire to wire, just like he did two years ago. The seven-year-old gelding is trained by Nakamura Stables, who was with him in 2023 as well, for his second win in the race. A A Gallardo was not his previous rider, but this time takes home his first Shoemaker Mile win. Congratulations to them! The winning race time was 1:32.24, the second quickest time in the race’s SA history. Let’s take a look at it:

(1/4 Mile- :23.36)- Out in front early, we have our two previous Shoemaker Mile winners running side by side, with this year’s eventual winner, the Nakamura Stables- trained Jakarta having a slight edge over Spankys Barn’s Electric Blue. It’s a length and a half to the rest of the field, where Hackett (Royalty Stables) and Absolutely Grande (Grimley) match each other’s stride for third. Rogerius Catalinus (Rock Creek) is a length behind them while longshot Poison Arrow (Mb Stables) trails the field.

(½ Mile- :47.73)- Jakarta and Electric Blue still battle it out on the front end, with Jakarta leading by a neck. The remaining four horses are also paired up down the backstretch, as Hackett and Absolutely Grande run two lengths off the lead, with Rogerius Catalinus and Poison Arrow right behind them.

(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- At the top of the turn, Jakarta would prevail in his battle with Electric Blue, pulling away from that one and extending his advantage within the turn. Electric Blue had enough, and began to fatigue quickly, and this seemed to catch Absolutely Grande by surprise, as K Carmouche took action to move him to the outside. Hackett did not have that issue, and could stay on the rail, but still had a lot of ground to make up on the leader. Rogerius Catalinus was still a length behind them, and Poison Arrow looked to go four wide.

(Finish- 1:32.24)- No one was going to be able to catch Jakarta on this day. There would be no new challenger for him, and he would be able to run comfortably to wire, officially winning by one in the books but realistically winning by two. Hackett maintained his pace to be second, ahead of three-way photo for show that sees Poison Arrow assure a high trifecta payout, ahead of Rogerius Catalinus and Electric Blue. Absolutely Grande finishes at the back.

About The Winner- Jakarta, trained by Nakamura Stables and ridden to victory by A A Gallardo, is a seven-year-old gelding by Killmonger and is out of the late Shes No Allison. He was bred by Patterson Stables here in California as third quarter two-year-old as was acquired by Nakamura Stables from Fractious for $450.000 in a January 2022 private sale. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his eighth in 43 starts and his seventh stake win, all of which are graded. His career earnings are now $3,976.200.
