The Monomoy Girl ($160.000 Purse)
CD- For Fillies Three Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
June 18, 2022
Jinxed Artist was making her first start in a stake in the inaugural Monomoy Girl, and in a race that was wide open with no clear headliner, she seemed to have a very good shot at it. She had won two of three and had an appealing work at PRX coming into the race. It would end up being a two horse race, with both her and Tell Milady emerging as the class of the field, but Jinxed Artist would prevail in the end by a length. Smokey Stover is her proud owner, and will be hoping she is the next foal out of Jinxed Queen to thrive at this level. J Talamo was along for the ride. Congratulations to them! The time of the first ever Monomoy Girl goes down as 1:41.76. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :23.86)- Clumsy Jean takes the early lead for Night Rider Stables, but no one is seeking to pull out to a large advantage at this point. She has two fillies running to her outside, each starting much better then they would finish as TwinTowersRacing’s Woketard is second and The Secret Is Out is third for Nakamura Stables. The other three are right behind them, within a length and a half, so the field is packed together quite closely to start. Jinxed Artist, the eventual winner from Smokey Stover runs in the third lane, with Olga (Arindel) on the rail and Tell Milady (Nakamura Stables) between horses.
(½ Mile- :47.65)- Not much changes down the backstretch though Clumsy Jean now leads by a clear length over her rivals entering the turn. The maiden, Woketard, remains second with The Secret Is Out running in the third lane. An opening presents itself at the top of the turn for Olga, and she starts to show interest in taking advantage of it. Jinxed Artist and Tell Milady may have just been toying with the rest of the field at this point, as they were two lengths from the lead and waiting for their time to strike.
(Top Of The Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Jinxed Artist would win this race in the turn with an incredible effort. Very quickly, she would use the opening the was between Woketard and The Secret Is Out and look to make that pass. The impressive thing was how easily she made it look, and I don’t think either of those rivals ever recovered from being caught in the tail wind. But the race was won here not because of that, but because this move allowed her to put two lengths on Tell Milady very quickly, since that one did not make her move at the same time. Jinxed Artist wasn’t done making passes in the turn, though, with Olga also not being able to put up much of a fight against her, and this would leave only Clumsy Jean to pass. Jinxed Artist was clearly the one to beat at this point, and by the time they reached the top of the stretch, she had passed everyone, with a head in front of the early pacesetter and unless something highly unexpected happened, she was on her way to the victory. Tell Milady did not get started at the same time, but in the second half of the turn, she also began to make a move. This was simply making her look like second part of the exacta, since she had lost so much ground to Jinxed Artist at this point.
(Finish- 1:41.76)- It’s all Jinxed Artist in the stretch, as there was no one that was going to catch her. She had plenty of run, and goes on to win the race by a length in comfortable fashion. Given her pedigree, you have to be very excited about her future to run in bigger and better and quite possibly, a run at the BC. That of course, seems like a big aspiration right now but there is plenty to like. Tell Milady was probably a little bit better than her in the stretch, but she needed to be a much more than just a bit better to have a shot. If she began her move in the turn a little earlier, then this could have been an entertaining stretch battle. Olga finishes third, but make no mistake, she was a soundly beaten third, with Clumsy Jean tiring back to fourth. Then it was much further back to The Secret Is Out and Woketard, who had offensive performances.
About The Winner- Jinxed Artist, trained by Smokey Stover and ridden to victory by J Talamo, is a three year old filly by Con Artist, and is out of Jinxed Queen. She was bred by Smokey Stover in Florida as a second quarter two year old and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in eight starts, and her first stake win. Her career earnings are now $138.220.
