This horse was being beaten at the free track at the end of last year but has made a truly remarkable HRP transformation this year as a five year old winning his last two both in black type company. His win last time out in the Tokyo City Cup was stunning coming from a long way back to win by a fairly comfortable length. The trouble with this race is that he gets top weight and of course its hard for a horse to run the same race twice here so we are not sure whats going to happen. There’s no doubt despite the fact he was sprinting at the end of last year that he loves an extreme trip and if he can produce his finish at the end of this 9 furlongs he may just defy top weight.

2 Smoking Makes You Il Maxmillion Farm Saez L

A neck winner in a turf sprint allowance at TUP last time is not what you expect to see in a dirt route stakes race but at HRP anything can happen and this horses works have improved to stakes winning level. A little look back in his form as a three year old and the good second in the CAC Derby would be good enough off bottom weight to put him in at the end.

3 Pure Gifts Mb Stables Velazquez J

Mb Stables is a master at getting good horses into handicaps with low weights and this former TC hopeful has enough form through his career to be very prominent in this race. He won the Marine after failing to qualify for the KYD but lost his way a little after and has only recently started to look like his old self. A winner of two good races he was badly drawn in the Metropolitan Handicap but showed up for a long way before weakening out of it. I am not sure he is the force he was but i am sure he will be well supported by the public to get Mb yet another graded stakes win.

4 Five Little Pigs Nolespan Racing Franco G

This was a real find for the new owner who claimed him out of cheap sprint claimers and has got two great runs out of him over longer trips. He led for a long time before weakening into third in the All American which was a good effort. The biggest thing against him here is that he carries the same weight as some more established stayers but he is working well and hey this is HRP so why shouldnt a former claiming sprinter win this race.

5 What The Farley YME Stable Prat F
This horse is working like a stakes winner but despite some high speed figures doesnt win too often these days. He actually ran pretty well in the Ali and then last time in the BEL Gold Cup and i kind of have a feeling he may just win this race today.

6 Joffre Mb Stables Bejarano R

The second from the stable and another good horse snuck in with bottom weight from the trainer. Fourth in the HOL Derby after an Empire Classic win last year he has been disappointing this year but comes back to dirt today and that may just be what he’s looking for. He has some of the fastest works in the field and the Bejarano/Mb partnership that has been oh so successful recently.

7 Akkadian Nakamura Stables Talamo J

A nice three year old but is poorly off at the weights and gets the wide draw to make it even harder for him. A close second in the Fountain Of Youth put hi in the KYD picture for a while so he is no forlorn hope and will be an interesting runner of only to judge the three’s with no weight advantage.

SUMMARY

A nice little race and for me between Joffre and What The Farley. Joffre has just a few more ticks in the boxes so may just shade it but i really like this as my Exacta of the day.
