Jones Stakes – Grade 3 – $300.000
For Three Year Olds
One and one sixteenth Mile – Dirt – PRX
August 23, 2022
What this field lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Three horses in this field have won at graded level, which should give them an edge here. But the other two have come close at this level and are stakes winners. Under the category of what have you done for me lately, Cheveley Park (Mo Mentum Farm) wired the field in the Marine (G3) last out. And Crypto (Maximillion Farm) set a new track record in the IND Derby the last time he ran. Pennine Way (Hippyheart) wired the field in the LA Derby last start to extend his winning streak to three and looks ready to take the next step up. And Good Guy (Arindel) came from off the pace to win the Winn (G3) two starts back. Party Wagon (Martyparty) won the TUP Derby in March, then finished second just behind Good Guy in the Winn (G3).
Here’s the field:
#1 Party Wagon
Owner: Martyparty
Won the TUP Derby in March but has not been able to get back to the winner’s circle since. Finished second in the Winn (G3) two starts back, then couldn’t hit the board in the MTH Cup (G3) last out. Possible 1 /8 mile is a little too far for this colt. He’s been successful at this distance, so I wouldn’t count him out.
#2 Pennine Way
Owner: Hippyheart
Comes in here riding a three-race win streak, including a win in the LA Derby last out where he came within a whisker of the track record. Does his best running on or near the lead and has the speed to get there. Could have a say in the outcome.
#3 Good Guy
Owner: Arindel
Won the Winn (G3) two starts back but finished last in the SAR Derby (G1) after that. Working well up to this race, but race day performances are a bit uneven.
#4 Cheveley Park
Owner: Mo Mentum Farm
Won the Marine (G3) last start after knocking on the door in the Lexington (G3) and the Ruby Stakes (G3). If experience counts for anything, this one might be the one to beat.
#5 Crypto
Owner: Maximillion Farm
Broke the track record at IND last out winning the IND Derby (G3) at the same distance as this race. It’s enough to get him noticed in this field. As one of the three graded winners, he looks to be in the mix at the wire.
