Welcome back to Belmont Park where on Sunday the GIII Miss Grillo took place. We had a field of twelve young ladies go to the gate for this and owner Chili King Stables was looking to take this race in back to back years. Lets take a look on how it went down.
The winner of this years GIII Miss Grillo was Lady Lois Of Wynne. Going off at odds of 4/1 was coming in off a third in the Johnson at Saratoga and in the money five of her last six was looking to grab her first win on the year and she did just that. Getting out of the gate and sitting ninth just seven lengths from the leader Tennessee Titan, as she turned the corner jockey Jose Ortiz gave her a few taps of the stick and she picked it up, as she ran past the competition in front of her to get up in time to win by a quarter of a length. Winning in a time of 1:40.36 for the mile and sixteenth over the sod and taking home a check for $120.000 for owner / breeder Drabfantasy.
2) Complusmentus ~ 13/1 on the tote board and heading into this start off of three consecutive second place finishes and looking to break that trend here on Sunday. Away at the break and sitting in good position in fourth, as she made her way into the stretch Junior Alvarado went to work and the two pushed for the wire, but was passed by Lady Lois Of Wynne leaving her second once again by a quarter of a length. She went out for owner Second Chance Farm who picks up a check for $48.000.
3) You Gotta Believe ~ 44/1 and came into this one off her Maiden score at DMR and was looking to successfully make the step up. Out and away seventh at the break and just even lengths from the leader, as she sat there heading into the straightaway jockey Rafael Bejarano went to work and the longshot filly had her running shoes on, as she closed well to get up to finish third by a length. She went out for owner Aarons Hosses who picks up a check $24.000.
4) Farleys Sky ~ 5/1 a winner at MTH last time out breaking her Maiden at the mile and sixteenth distance that she was at today was looking to do the same today. Away eleventh of the twelve at the break and nine lengths from the front, as she headed into the lane still in eleventh she looked to weave her way through the others. Making up ground and passing one by one she ran out of running room and settled for fourth beaten by a length under Elvis Trujillo. She went out for owner Serenity Stables who picks up $8.000 for the run.
5) Tennessee Titan ~ 11/1 and making her third start wasted no time at the sound of the bell getting out to a length advantage with Chris DeCarlo, as she kept that lead heading into the stretch run Chris looked to get her home and the wire to wire score, but was caught by others leaving her fifth today here run the Miss Grillo. She went out for owner / breeder D J C Racing Stables.
6) Shes Proud ~ 7/1 and coming in off her Maiden score at Saratoga was looking to make it two in a row on the step up in class. Out of the gate and sitting fifth, as she moved into second heading into the lane Luis Saez went to work hoping to get her home, but she could not get to the others leaving her sixth in this one. She went out for owner / breeder Spark Racing.
7) Spider ~ 57/1 and making her first start on the sod was coming into this off a fifth place finish in the GI DMR Debutante. Jockey Angel Arroyo getting the call today on her was away eighth at the break, as she dropped to ninth before heading into the stretch Angel tried making a run with her but only moved up two spots finishing seventh today. She went out for owner Blushing Meadows.
8) Eleven Black ~ 8/1 and a winner against State Bred Maidens up at Saratoga in her last one were looking to build off that effort. Away last of the twelve and ten lengths from the leaders, as she came into the stretch Javier Castellano looked to get her going, but today was not her day as she ran under the line finishing eighth. She went out for owner / breeder Night Mare Racing.
9) T S Manhattan ~ 7/1 and looking to break her Maiden her in the Miss Grillo and making her second start on the sod was away tenth at the break, as Joel Rosario turned the corner with her the two picked up a spot in the stretch to finish ninth. She went out for owner Chili King Stables.
10) Jump Before You Look ~ 9/1 and a winner of two in a row were looking to make it a third here in the Miss Grillo. Getting away sixth at the break and five lengths from the leader, as she turned for home Kendrick Carmouche went to work, but she did not fire in this one leaving her tenth today. She went out for owner / breeder Axeman.
11) Swarley Kapai ~ 18/1 and a winner by five lengths last time out at Saratoga breaking her Maiden against State Breds was looking to do it again. Away third at the break, as she lost position throughout the race she went under the line to finish eleventh with jockey Rajiv Maragh. She went out for owner / breeder Grimley.
12) Eastern Sweetness ~ *4.75 and the favorite for the GIII Miss Grillo was third in her last start against N1X. Away second at the break and just a length behind she backed up from there leaving her last in this one with Pablo Fragoso aboard. She went out for owner Rheingold Stables.
