Chicago Stakes (Grade 3)- $225.000 Purse
CD- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
Seven Furlongs on the Dirt
June 24, 2023
Depending on how one wants to determine the status of this Chicago Stakes, and the separate Chicago Stakes that the game lists from 2018 until 2021, Lady Sammyantha may or may not have been a previous winner of this race. It is my personal belief that this is all the same race, so congratulations to the Ginger Haggis mare on winning the stake for the second time in her career. She previously won the race in 2021, when it was held at AP, but like many other stakes, it carried over here to CD with the unfortunate demise of that racetrack. Lady Sammyantha was the second choice on the board, as the betting public gave their nod to Curlina, but it wouldn’t matter as she gets the win here for trainer, The Sidley Stud. Combining the two races listed by the game, it is the second career win in the Chicago Stakes for the trainer, and the first for jockey A Beschizza. Congratulations to them! The time of the victory was 1:21.70, which is among the quicker times of the race, overall, but the fastest such time of the editions held at CD. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.69)- Oceanus goes out to the lead for Wood Duck Stables and will be clear of the opposition by a length after a quarter mile. Our eventual winner, The Sidley Stud’s Lady Sammyantha is in an ideal stalking position right now and is to the inside of Oceanus. Right beside her on the rail is the post time favorite, gain but Curlina with Commanding Jane nearby while running fourth for Night Rider Stables. In the middle of the pack, Lassitude leads the next group of three while riding the rail for TwinTowersRacing, with Queen Mother (Wood Duck Stables) and Silver Jazzmin (The Sidley Stud) to her outside. There’s a gap of a length and half to the final three, who run together. Lucky Insist (Rock Creek) is a head in front of Stinky Rene (TwinTowersRacing) and Longclaws Maggie (Big Jd Racing) back there.
(1/2 Mile- :46.01, Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Oceanus holds a comfortable lead for the duration of the backstretch and even throughout the turn. No one had gotten up to challenge her yet, so she seemed to be in a good position for the stretch, as she was not killing herself with these fractions. Lady Sammyantha would start to creep closer moving closer to the stretch, and now we looked to have a good battle on our hands. Curlina and Commanding Jane were not able to make the same move, and there really had not been much going on further back up to this point. Eventually, we figured to see a run from behind, but it had not happened yet.
(Finish- 1:21.70)- Lady Sammyantha continued make up a bit of ground early in the stretch before running right alongside Oceanus with a furlong to go. It is then where she would poke a head in front, and without anyone else making a major charge, the race seemed to be in the bag. Queen Mother was making a subtle gain but did not look like she was getting there quick enough. Silver Jazzmin was winding up on the far outside, but also had a lot of ground to make up. There would be no additional drama in the late moments, as this race belong to Lady Sammyantha who goes on to win by essentially a length. Queen Mother takes second with Silver Jazzmin third, ahead of Oceanus and Commanding Jane. There were supposedly five others in this race, but you would be forgiven if you never realized they were there. The final order, though, will read, Stinky Rene, Longclaws Maggie, Lucky Insist, Curlina, and Lassitude.
About The Winner- Lady Sammyantha, trained by The Sidley Stud, and ridden to victory by A Beschizza, is a five-year-old mare by Ginger Haggis and is out of Madame Broulard. She was bred in Ontario as a yearling by The Sidley Stud, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her eighth in 32 starts, her seventh stake win, and fifth graded win. Her career earnings are now $1,050.640.
