BC Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1)- $2,000.000 Purse
DMR- For Fillies Two Years Old
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Dirt
November 5, 2021
With such a strong field in the BC Juvenile Fillies, bettors looked away from Lailoni, and she would go off at odds of 121/1. No one probably thought she was a bad horse, but she didn’t have as much graded success as others in the field did. None of that would matter as she would be much the best in this race to give trainer Arindel his first, of likely more, career BC win. Last month, while others were running in races like the Frizette or Alcibiades, Lailoni was running against ON breds, in the Shady Well Stakes. She won the race impressively, but it was not enough to excite many, so she would go off as a big longshot. In the end, those who believed in her would get massively rewarded, and Arindel celebrates the greatest as his filly by Soviet Warrior wins this prestigious race. Both he and jockey R M Hernandez are first time winners of this race. Congratulations! The winning time was 1:42.23. Let’s take a look!
(¼ Mile- :23.40)- The race begins with The Magic Box and Keno Queen, trained by Smokey Stover and Mb Stables respectively, jumping out to the lead and running side by side early on. Directors Chair would take a seat right behind them for Nakamura Stables, and to her inside, along the rail, we would have our eventual winner from Arindel, Lailoni. She would start well, and did well to grab a good position on the track for the race. There’s a three wide group, starting in the second lane, right behind her, consisting of Moment To Dream (Fractious), Folded Wings (Jive Inc), and Present Tense (Mb Stables). About a length and a half behind them, we have Grandest Lady (La Canada Racehorses) on the rail and In Amongst The Wreck (Jive Inc.) Then, after a gap of about two lengths, we have our remaining five horses, who line up in a five wide fashion early on. From inside to outside, this is Lassitude (TwinTowersRacing), Lemrun (Fractious), Demanding Commander (Hippyheart), Sensation (Mb Stables), and Kicks (Aer Stables).
(½ Mile- :47.01)- Around the opening turn and into the backstretch, we don’t see any changes at the front end. Both The Magic Box and Keno Queen are running side by side with The Magic Box being slightly in front. Directors Chair and Lailoni are each getting the desirable stalking trip, with Lailoni still nicely positioned on the rail. Moment To Dream is next, and she moved ahead of those she had been running with to be by herself now for the backstretch run. Folded Wings and Present Tense still ran to her outside, a length behind, and Grandest Lady moved up a bit to be three wide with them. There was a gap there in the lane that Moment To Dream was in, but that opening was now about to be taken by the other Fractious entry, Lemrun. That filly was the most interesting mover of this portion, making a mild charge after running with the back five. The others, as of this point, were not doing much to talk about.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Moving in the turn, The Magic Box and Keno Queen still seem to be running well at the front, but it was time for Lailoni to make her move. To do this, she would need to come off the rail and move into the three wide position. She would not have any issue here with Directors Chair, who had been to her outside since that one also wanted to move forward. Approaching the top of the stretch, Lailoni powered to the front, running even with the pacesetters and getting the few that believed in her in the stands to start going crazy. Directors Chair lost a length to her here, something that in the end would be very valuable. Keno Queen still seemed as though she would be a threat in the stretch, but The Magic Box was not looking as good. Moment To Dream was still looking good, and had a nice lane open up for her along the inside of The Magic Box. Folded Wings was a length behind her and also looking like she could do something, but would have more traffic to maneuver around. In the middle of the field, Grandest Lady was on the rail and Present Tense a few lanes over, and about to be joined by In Amongst The Wreck. Both were close enough to make a move, but needed to get moving now. The task would be more difficult for those further back.
(Finish- 1:42.23)- In the stretch, Lailoni took the lead from Keno Queen, but there were bigger concerns now. Moment To Dream was looking quite good to her inside and gradually gaining on her. On her outside, Directors Chair was determined to get that length back on her that she lost in the turn. Folded Wings was coming on well, too. This meant that Lailoni had to grind it out all the way to wire, and when they would hit the wire, the top three would hit the wire together. In a close photo, the longest shot on the board, Lailoni would narrowly prevail over second place Directors Chair and third place Moment To Dream, with .01 the margin between first and second as well as second third. Folded Wings was seen in this picture, too, being half a length behind the top three. Following them, there was a length and a half to the late running Lassitude, then Keno Queen, Grandest Lady, The Magic Box, and In Amongst The Wreck. Further back, it was Kicks, Demanding Commander, Lemrun, and Sensation.
About the Winner- Lailoni, trained by Arindel and ridden to victory by R M Hernandez, is a two year old filly by Soviet Warrior and is out of Laie. She was bred by Arindel as a yearling in Ontario, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her third in six starts, her second stake win, and first graded win. Her career earnings are now $1,385.200.
