Let’s Go Fishing with the Pelican

The Pelican Stakes
TAM Race #12 6f Dirt Stake
Purse $100.000 For Four Year Olds And Upward.

1      Cp Laggy Gyal        Night Rider Stables       Gaffalione T

A lightly raced five year old he has been pretty consistent since he started racing and his effort in the LCD Sprint last time suggests that patience is about to pay off. No world beater but with the ace draw this may just be an opportunity to add to his resume.

2       Was Done          Mwn Racing     Castanon J L

Another one that hasn’t seen much racing he followed up a decent maiden win with a nice Allowance victory at GP in a smart time. A difficult draw ended his chances in the Palos Verdes last time and he is worth another chance from the perfect draw today.

3       Made To Perfection      La Rosa Stables      Gallardo A A

It seems this race is lending itself to lightly raced horses as this one too hasn’t seen much of the track. The winner of four from eight he comes into this off a strong allowance win at PRX in a very fast time. A win here could see him take on the top races as there is plenty of promise, now its time to really make his mark.

4      Sunkist      LionKing Stables      Velazquez J R

A consistent sprinter on both turf and dirt, i do like to see the ability to mix things up in a good horse. With seven wins under his belt he looks ready to take a race like this on but this is a much better field than it looks on paper and it will take a good performance to win it.

5      Silent Commander      El Jamsha Racing       Ferrer J C

This race is an interesting mix of stakes performers and those that are looking to break through. This is one of the aforementioned with a victory in the Peter Pan back in 2020 and some good efforts in the top three year old routes of that year. Recently he had switched to turf where he placed twice at grade one level so on a class level he looks a step ahead of these. However, his works have dropped off a little and one has to wonder if his career is coming to an end.

6       Strategic Edge       Maletto         Cedillo A

Six of this six year olds seven wins have come in routes but that generally means little at HRP and his last work suggests he will sprint just as well as is usually the case with a good horse here. An interesting entry who at his best would be right in this but i think there may be a couple of progressive ones in this race that may be too hot to handle.

7       Carnoustie        Smokey Stover       Centeno D E

The winner of the Vosburgh and close up in the 2020 BC Sprint he spent all of last year just picking off smaller races but it seems that this year he may be given his head to explore his potential. His last work was lightening fast and he hails from a stable who has such depth in the stable that you have to think he will start favorite and be a major chance.

8     First Down Dash         John Henry        Davis D

The six year old has been a solid sprinter through his career but faces a tough draw here to try and add to his prize money. He is capable of running very fast times and his works have been very very good so it is not down to his ability but more down to how the race engine spits him out of the gate and how he handles the wide draw.

9      Wrecking Havoc      Threshold        Saez G

The car park goes to another solid sprinting type who like the horse inside him relies on more than just his ability to get into this race. Fast and good enough at his best you just have to accept the randomness of the race engine as to whether you will get a run for your money.

SUMMARY

This is a real interesting mix of accomplished sprinters and promising types that could be anything. Like a handicap the less accomplished have been given the inside draw and the more accomplished the wide ones which makes this race pretty lottery like and it really will come down to luck in running. There isn’t a horse here that couldn’t win so a pin may be your best bet, for the fun of it i will box up 7,8 and 3 for the Exacta.
