It took a photo to decide The Ruthless at AQU on Sunday… in the end Sharis Stables’ Mafia was in front on the wire by the slimmest of margins, with an off-the-pace win, her first stakes score. Bronx Belle battled down the lane but was a hard-luck second, a length in front of the forwardly placed Mental in third. Five Grand Girl, the post time favorite, closed late but ended up fourth in the field of seven sophomore fillies.
Mafia is a 3yo bay filly by Buffalo Rising – Big Story, by Decima, and she was bred by her owner here in NY. This was her second victory from six starts, her first stakes score, and she now has earnings of $118.600. Congrats to the connections.

Mafia away slowest of all, lacked interest until the far turn, asked and responded, took over into the lane, lasted while all out. Bronx Belle lacked early speed, steady gain, battled to the wire, missed head-bob. Mental pressed the pace throughout, could not go on with top pair. Five Grand Girl rated back off of the pace, some late interest. Dimes was forwardly placed, nothing left for the drive. Just A Dream broke alertly, set the pace to the turn, folded. Spirit World forced the issue for a half, spent.
