BC Fillies and Mares Turf (Grade 1)- $2,000.000 Purse
KEE- For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
One Mile and Three Sixteenths on the Turf
November 7, 2020
On Saturday in the BC Fillies and Mares Turf, La Terrifiant had the chance to win three BC races for her career, but she would come up about a length short in that mission. Instead, it would be the five year old mare Maggie Greene pulling off the win for The Sidley Stud, giving that trainer their second career BC win, and first in this stake. This filly had a promising start to the year, winning three races in a row, and remained a steady producer all year. When the stage would be the biggest, she would step up again here, with the big time win. Aboard Maggie Greene was a steady hand in this race, as R Bejarano has now won it four times, making him the most successful jockey in the race. The race was won in a time of 1:52.24. Before we get into the recap, I do want to mention that it was my intention to pick La Terrifiant in the preview and not Rules Are Madness as I errantly put “9” instead of “8”. On to the race!
(½ Mile- :47.12)- The opening half mile of the race sees a bunch of double digits out in front. From the gate, Maxmillion Farm’s Dawning Ice Age was the quickest from her outermost post, but eventually the early leader would be Envy, out of Mo Mentum Farm. Those two would get to the end of the front stretch first, but around the first turn they would be joined by Smokey Stover’s Holualoa and another Maxmillion entry, My Girl Makita. That would make it four who started on the outside in the lead positions early on. La Terrifiant, from Our Athletes, seemed to be in a good position, stalking them while on the rail, and Proud Eights (Estero Farms) was in a similar position a couple lanes over. Sitting just behind them, would be our eventual winner, The Sidley Stud’s Maggie Greene. She ran seventh, three and a half lengths from the lead, and had Too Scared To Party, the post time favorite from Smokey Stover to her outside. Nearby to the inside were Unmistakable (Mb Stables) and Never Enough (Mb Stables). Next would be Franke (Australia Wide), then Rules Are Madness (Angelos Stable) and Pirate Petranella (Diablo Diablo), with Forty Chai (Estero Farms) trailing.
(¾ Mile- 1:10.39)- Nothing that significant happens as they make their way down the backstretch, except for the fact that Dawning Ice Age loses a little bit of ground. Otherwise, the double digits in front are still doing well, with Envy now ahead of Holualoa and My Girl Makita. La Terrifiant got a little closer, and would hope to move to the outside of Envy during the turn. Proud Eights held her ground on the outside as Maggie Greene may have gained about half a length during this stretch. For the most part, she was staying in her lane which now looked like it would be following La Terrifiant through. Unmistakable and Too Scared To Party did not push forward more, as did those running behind them.
(Top of Stretch, 1.5F to Go)- Rounding the turn, Envy would hold on to the lead, with both Holualoa and My Girl Makita pulling up to be even with her but not making the pass. La Terrifiant, as it had seemed, had made the move to Envy’s outside work, and at the top of the stretch, she seemed to be in a very good spot. If there was any room for Maggie Greene to follow her through, she would be beaten to the spot by Unmistakable, so if you told me at this point that Maggie Greene was about to win the race, I would not have believed it due to having nowhere to go. Proud Eights and Too Scared To Party were hanging in their outside lanes and making up some ground, putting us about eight across the track. No one further back was making a move.
(Finish- 1:52.24)- Somehow, with a furlong to go, there was a small opening that presented itself between Unmistakable and La Terrifiant, and while La Terrifiant did not win she can be given the courteous horse of the race award by moving down just a little bit more so that Maggie Greene could slide on through into that lane. This allowed Maggie Greene to be even with the eight horse wall at the front of the field. At this point, it’s a one furlong dash, and Maggie Greene’s momentum would be able to carry her on through. She’s the best of the bunch, and wins the race by half a length over Unmistakable and La Terrifiant, who were close for second. Too Scared To Party takes home the fourth place check narrowly over My Girl Makita. The rest of the running order is Envy, Pirate Petranella, Holualoa, Rules Are Madness, Franke, Proud Eights, Forty Chai, Never Enough, and Dawning Ice Age.
About The Winner- Maggie Greene, trained by The Sidley Stud, and ridden to victory by R Bejarano, is a five year old mare by the late Walkin Dead, and is out of the late Dead Rainbow. She was bred in Louisiana by Team 7 Illusions as a yearling, and acquired by The SIdley Stud when she was still unraced in private sales for just $6.770. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her 13th in 38 starts, and her eleventh stake win, all of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $3,569.160.
