Bourbon (Grade 2) (BC)- $200.000 Purse
KEE- For Two Year Olds
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf
October 4, 2020
With so much on the line for its winner, and likely anyone in the top three, the Grade 2 Bourbon was wide open with twelve horses hoping it would be them that could get the automatic ticket into the BC Juvenile Turf. In such a race, it helps to have championship pedigree, and Mahogany Storm certainly does. Being out of Hawaiian Pirate, a previous winner of the BC Juvenile Fillies, that was something that could bode well for her here. Her sire, Good Authority has also become one of the best sires in the game. Mahogany Storm didn’t take the easy route to get this win either, being well off the pace for more than half the race before a great push at the end would get her the win. That was her mom’s running style, as well. It is the first win in the race for her trainer, Smokey Stover. Jockey R Bejarano has plenty of experience with winning here, though, as it is his fourth winner. The time of the victory was 1:40.44, which is among the better winning times of the race. Let’s take a look!
(¼ Mile- :23.51)- Out front early, it is Invalidate, out of Barcelona Farms, and he takes a length lead over General Principle, from Nakamura Stables, who runs to the outside of the Mb Stables’ trained Dynamic. Behind them, there is a length and a half gap to a group of three that sees Just Wanna Blaze, from Gdp Inc, in the middle , and with a head in front of Rembrandt (Mo Mentum Farm) on his inside, and De Novo (Nakamura Stables) on the outside. Residential Buyer (Aer Stables) is nearby and running in the fourth lane. Sensei (Barcelona Farms) and Valid Point (Mb Stables) run side by side towards the rail, and to their outside is the eventual winner of the race, Mahogany Storm, from Smokey Stover. He runs in the tenth position here, six lengths from the front while running in the third lane. The trailers are Raunchy Bay (Estero Farms) and well back to Colt Bennett (Luz International).
(½ Mile- :47.00)- There is no let up with Invalidate on the front end as he opens up a little bit over the backstretch, pulling out to a two and a half length cushion just prior to entering the turn. Both Dynamic and General Principle, did not concern themselves with him and backed off their pursuit just a little bit. Residential Buyer was also content to hold his lane, and run to the outside of those two. Further back, we do not see much in the way of movement, although the heart of the back is getting rather congested now. Mahogany Storm was still in tenth, and still trailing by seven lengths, but for him it was good to be in the lane that he was in, allowing him to keep to the outside of where most of the traffic would be.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Invalidate has certainly validated his lead around turn, as he continued to run well, leading by a length and a half over Dynamic, but after him, it is four lengths to the next horses. And that was a large group, as the wall gets set up for the third position entering the top of the stretch, Mahogany Storm is forced considerably wide here for the stretch, but had no other option and was coming with an all out drive. General Principle has been backpedaling now, but Valid Point, Sensei, and Just Wanna Blaze were hoping to get involved here. Colt Bennett had joined the rest of the field now, but still had a lot of work to do.
(Finish- 1:40.44)- In the stretch, we see several making late bids in what was one of the more interesting stretch runs I had watched here in a while. Invalidate was trying to hang on the best he could, but the push of both Mahogany Storm and Valid Point seemed as though it might be too much for him, and then the bid from Colt Bennett made it even more exciting. Raunchy Bay was looking good as well. At the end, it would be Mahogany Storm topping fellow late runner Valid Point while Invalidate hangs on for the third position. Fourth goes to Colt Bennett, but a head over Raunchy Bay. Longshot Sensei made up some ground as well late. Just Wanna Blaze is next, topping the fading Dynamic. Rounding out the order, it is Residential Buyer, Rembrandt, General Principle and De Novo.
About The Winner- Mahogany Storm, trained by Smokey Stover and ridden to victory by R Bejarano, is a two year old colt by Good Authority, and is out of Hawaiian Pirate. He was bred in New York by Smokey Stover as a yearling and they have been together throughout! Congratulations to the connections! The win is his second in four starts, and his first stake win. His career earnings are now $163.120.
