5 DMR HOL Turf Cup (GII)
$200.000 3yo&Up 1 1/2m Turf 3yo 121lbs Older 124lbs
Almost 10-years since HOL closed… hard to believe, but the HOL Turf Cup (GII) lives on… a race with a long history, and one everyone wants to win. With past winners like Alpha Ultimo, Rockefella and Bronze Sabre, it’s a who’s-who of turf champions… even Beav took the ’07 rendition with Air Jaws… oh, the good ol’ days.
So, which way to go here… do we have a repeat of the Sycamore (GIII) where Real One and Anemoi were inseparable on the finish line, or can Cp Sad Pain improve off of his neck back performance? Is it Seven Is Lucky that keeps his hot hand going showing those six straight on-the-board finishes? Does Cherokee Raj take his sprint skills to the marathon distance? Quite a few scenarios in the mix…
I’ll take Seven Is Lucky as my top selection… I think he’s fresh with only four ’23 starts, and I he could be clamoring for the added distance and his late style. Let’s go a different direction and take Champion In Action as the second choice. He hasn’t won this year, but likes the marathon distance, and it could set-up to be a race for him to get back to the winner’s circle.
