9 SAR The Manhattan (GI)
$1,000.000 4yo&Up 13/16m Turf 123lbs
The third leg of the TC but that bonus is safe (in more ways than one) and we look at a field of marathon gents set to go a mile and three sixteenths on the lawn in The Manhattan (GI), a $1,000.000 stakes that has the gate full of class. Wow, which way do you go here? I’ll take American Generals off of those back-to-back graded scores in the Elkhorn (GII) and the Louisville (GIII)… in fact, he’s won four of his last five and hasn’t been off the board in a long long time… he’s tough on any type of grass, make it as dry or wet as you want… he rises to the occasion. Since The Card and I agree in principal, I feel good about this one, and I put Fanatical Empire in the second spot. The post position is a bit of a concern, but he’s been towards the outside in a bunch of recent races and has been right there. He won the Forrester (GI) at CD on KYD day, going wire to wire… another like that, and he could be very very tough. It’s a big money race, so let’s be sure to include Mb Stables in the talk and I’ll take Killer Instinct in the third spot. Three solid starts vs. the best in the land including a win in the Man o War (GII) last out, at AQU. He’s a monster in every way shape and form… in fact, I can’t wait for this one to get to the shed… but he still has races to win.
This is a deep deep field and it could go any number of ways.
