BC Filly & Mare Turf winner, Attraction, came into this race with back-to-back wins at graded level. After a year of routing, she shortened up to 6 ½ furlongs and took on a field of CA-breds. With everyone carrying 123 pounds, she looked like a sure bet. But Saturday was not to be her day.
They came out of the chute and Attraction went immediately to the lead with Copper Zombies to her inside and Treasure Map to her outside pressing the early pace. Treasure Map got a nose in front but Attraction fought back. Those two battled all the way onto the main track. Attraction finally shook free and took command by a length with Treasure Map second to her outside and Love Runs Deep on the inside in third. Then it was Copper Zombies, Mars Explorer, Laffin Midnight Girl, and Magic Rataro trailing the field by 2 ½ lengths.
With a furlong to run, Attraction still led the way. Treasure Map dropped out of it but Mars Explorer was right there to take her place. Love Runs Deep kept up the pressure on the inside. Magic Rataro switched to the far outside and made a late run. Laffin Midnight Girl tried to muscle her way between Attraction and Mars Explorer who caught the leader in the shadow of the wire to win by ¼ length.
After hitting the board four consecutive times at allowance and optional claimer level, you knew it was only a matter of time before Diablo Diablo’s homebred made it to the winner’s circle in stakes company. And she did so with style, running down one of the top females to ever compete at HRP. The win boosted her career record to 12-5-4-0 $259.480.
Order of Finish:
Mars Explorer (Diablo Diablo) – Came from the back of the pack to nip the leader at the wire.
Attraction (Mm Racing) – Led early but came up a nose short at the wire.
Love Runs Deep (Azeman) – Stalked the pace but couldn’t get past the leaders.
Laffin Midnight Girl – Late run got her a tie with Love Runs Deep for third.
Magic Rataro (Czech Out Farms) – Made a late run to finish fifth by less than a length.
Treasure Map (First Class Stable) – Pressed the early pace but faded to finish sixth.
Copper Zombies – In the mix early, but never really a factor.
