The Quick Call (Grade 3)- $175.000 Purse
SAR- For Three Year Olds
Five and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
July 14, 2024
Mb Stables has had plenty of success in the Quick Call, being the winning trainer in each of the three previous runnings of the race and four in total. For 2024, he would start two horses in hopes of extending his winning streak in the race, and Bad Fear would get the job done as he prevails by a neck over Awad at the wire. For Mb Stables, that brings his total of Quick Call victories to five. Aboard the winner was T Gaffalione, who wins for the second time, and he his prior win was with an Mb runner (Creepy Rocky Party in 2022). I should throw in an obligatory mention that Mb’s 2022 win was in a dead heat with Gdp Inc’s Training Wheels, but he still has the virtual trophy for that race. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:02.20, the second fastest in stake history. Yes, it is also Mb Stables who holds that record, with Elijah G in 2021. Let’s take a look at the win:
(1/4 Mile- :22.31)- Awad goes to the lead for D J C Racing Stables and will hold a length advantage into the turn. One Beer is right behind him on the rail for South Shore Stables and stalking the leader on the outside is High Voltage’s Gunpowder. Right behind them, we have a group of three who are running alongside one another. From inside to outside, they consist of Serengeti Creeper (TwinTowersRacing), Freddo Caramel (Mo Mentum Farm) and Exemplary (Mb Stables). At the back is our eventual winner and post time favorite from Mb Stables, Bad Fear, but he is only about three and a half lengths from the lead.
(½ Mile- :45.00, Top of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Awad is great in the turn and will only add to his lead by the time they reach the top of the stretch. At this point, you had to wonder if he had gotten away from the rest of the field. One Beer remained second, but was not closing in, and Gunpowder was losing ground. Exemplary was pushing forward as the two he had been running with, Serengeti Creeper and Freddo Caramel ran evenly. While this was going on, T Gaffalione made an aggressive move with Bad Fear on exit of the turn to swing his horse five wide into the stretch. He had not passed anyone yet, but now had no one in his way if he could make a charge.
(Finish- 1:02.20)- Once in his lane, Bad Fear was clearly looking good, and it seemed inevitable that he would get as high as second. However, Awad was still running well, and it would take quite an effort to get that one as well and grab the win. Bad Fear was persistent, and as they got closer to the wire, he was at his best. Awad didn’t give in, but he had no answer for this charge and that would mean Bad Fear went on to win by a neck. Awad is second over Exemplary, and Freddo Caramel is the best of the rest for the fourth-place check. Rounding it out, it’s One Beer, Gunpowder, and Serengeti Creeper.
About The Winner- Bad Fear, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by T Gaffalione, is a three-year-old gelding by Good Authority and is out of Narragansett. He was bred as a yearling in Florida by Our Athletes and was acquired by Mb Stables when he was still unraced in the March 2023 auction for $6.010. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his fourth in nine starts, second stake win and first graded win. His career earnings are now $252.400.
