The Amsterdam (Grade 2)- $200.000 Purse
SAR- For Three Year Olds
Six and a Half Furlongs on the Dirt
August 1, 2021
The Amsterdam always seemed like it would be an up for grabs race, but when you add in nagging rain showers throughout the day left the track as muddy for the race. This would therefore create the added question of who would be the best mudders in the race, and for the most part this was a very inexperienced field in terms of running on off tracks. Mb Stables certainly liked the way it all played out, as the trainer’s three entrants took swept the podium in the race, led by Golden Treasure, who gets bragging rights over his stablemates with an approximate length win. It’s the fourth time that Mb Stables won the Amsterdam, having last done so in 2017 with the late Acquisitive. Jockey J L Ortiz has been in the winners circle now three times in the race, with his last win being in 2016. The time of the race was 1:17.57. Here’s a look at it!
(¼ Mile- :23.19)- Three horses vie for the early lead, and it would be Shifu Tan in front by a neck for Keikowin Racing over Fractious trained Plan To Wheel and Asgar’s Amazing Twizt. Jive Inc’s Dragonheart Hanny was initially with them, too, but dropped back into a stalking position. To his outside is Rotarian, from Mb Stables. They have about a full length advantage on our eventual winner, Golden Treasure, who holds the sixth spot for Mb Stables. Stablemate Snagglepuss is next, and it’s a couple lengths to our trailers, Rullah Party Crystal (Martyparty) and Elusive Quality (Robeth).
(½ Mile- :46.71, Top Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Shifu Tan continues to lead the way down the backstretch and into the turn, and he seems to be running quite well, as he puts some distance between he and both Plan To Wheel and Amazing Twizt. However, the one he did not gain on was Rotarian, who ran very well in the outside lane. Dragonheart Hanny was good in the turn, too, and looked like he might make a bid to take the lead early in the stretch. Snagglepuss made a strong move on exit of the turn, and for the moment passed stablemate Golden Treasure. As for that one, we really had not seen anything from him yet, and at this time, he didn’t look like he was about to win this race. He held his spot in the middle of the field, but had not made any sort of push to this point. Rullah Party Crystal cut into the gap a bit, while Elusive Quality was having a quality race elude him.
(Finish- 1:17.57)- Snagglepuss seemed to be the one to watch in the stretch, and he was full of run with a great lane in which to run. With a furlong to go, he only had a length to make up on the new leader, Rotarian. Shifu Tan was hanging around, but started to look as though he could not hold off challengers in the latter moments. Golden Treasure would look to follow Snagglepuss through initially but then altered his path to take the rail. Once there, Mb Stables was liking what he was seeing, as his horses were becoming the best three in the race, but still it looked like it would not be Golden Treasure that got it done. In the final half furlong or so, Golden Treasure had an additional push that his two stablemates would not have, and it would be him taking the top step of the podium on this rainy afternoon, prevailing over runner up Snagglepuss and third place Rotarian. They were well ahead of fourth place Rullah Party Crystal, who prevailed in the headbob over Shifu Tan. Dragonheart Hanny, Amazing Twist, Plan To Wheel and Elusive Quality round it out.
About The Winner- Golden Treasure, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by J L Ortiz, is a three year old gelding by Ooh Raw, and is out of Back Door Girl. He was bred in Florida by Boulevard as a second quarter two year old, and acquired by Mb Stables, via Valiance in private sales in December 2020 for $55.000. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his sixth in 12 starts, his second stake win, and first graded win. His career earnings are now $298.220.
