At odds of 26-1, Meekshallinherit defied the morning line and delivered one of the more surprising results of the young Kentucky Derby trail. The gray gelding, trained out of Big Jd Racing and piloted by Da Silva F H, closed relentlessly through the stretch to notch his second stakes victory of the season — a performance that will have the Derby trail buzzing. Sitting just off the pace through the early going, Da Silva had his charge perfectly placed to pounce when it mattered most, and the gray son of Native Music answered every call in emphatic fashion.
Race Recap — The TAM Derby, Grade III | 1 1/16 Miles, Dirt | Tampa Kentucky Derby Points Race
The 12-horse field broke from the gate with Terrorizer (TwinTowersRacing) seizing command immediately, showing his front-running tendencies on full display. The gray colt led through early fractions of :23.2 and :47.0, establishing a clear advantage through the opening half mile with Silver Hurricane (Mb Stables) tracking closely in second. Unruffled Charm settled just off the pace in fourth, while the eventual winner Meekshallinherit was content to cruise in fifth or sixth, stalking the pace in patient fashion.
Rounding the far turn, Terrorizer still had a narrow advantage, but the pack was tightening. Silver Hurricane moved up to challenge, engaging the leader as the field turned for home. At the same time, Meekshallinherit began a sweeping move from mid-pack — Da Silva threading through traffic with the confidence of a rider who knew he had horse beneath him. Southwind (Acber Farms), who had broken alertly from post 12 but found himself deep in the field early, launched his own determined late run.
In the stretch, Terrorizer’s lead evaporated as the closers hit their best stride. Meekshallinherit surged to the front in the final furlong, drawing off by a comfortable margin at the wire. Silver Hurricane finished a determined second, a neck clear of the rallying Southwind in third. Starbright and Express Run filled the next positions, while Superior Palace and Hulk, both of whom had raced wide tracking the pace, couldn’t sustain their runs through the lane.
Sweet Avenger showed early speed but faded to ninth as the route distance took its toll. Illusionary Artist, Renowned, and Unruffled Charm — the latter a creditable turf performer trying dirt — all struggled to fire their best on this surface and completed the order of finish.
Each Runner Mentioned:
Meekshallinherit — The winner. Tracked in mid-pack and delivered a decisive late move, winning convincingly under Da Silva F H for connections at Big Jd Racing.
Silver Hurricane — The 3-1 favorite ran a solid race, pressing throughout and finishing willingly in second, a neck clear of the show horse.
Southwind — Broke from the far outside post and raced deep most of the way, yet finished with authority to earn third. A solid effort from Acber Farms’ colt.
Starbright — The TwinTowersRacing runner raced patiently and flattened out in the stretch for a fourth-place finish, though he showed enough to suggest routing suits him.
Express Run — Alydar Stables’ versatile campaigner was prominent throughout but never found the extra gear needed at this level, finishing fifth.
Terrorizer — Led with conviction through the early fractions, but after setting the pace all the way to the lane, had little left for the stretch battle. Finished sixth.
Superior Palace — Raced well off the pace through the middle stages, but the lack of early kick on dirt limited his late impact. Sixth alongside Terrorizer at the wire.
Hulk — D J C Racing Stables’ gelding ran a fair race but never threatened the leaders down the lane, finishing eighth.
Sweet Avenger — Showed front-running tendencies early before fading to ninth as the distance proved a step further than his best form.
Illusionary Artist — Nakamura Stables’ runner showed early position but found the 1 1/16-mile dirt test beyond his best reach, fading to tenth.
Renowned — Was part of a group that tracked mid-pack the whole way without a decisive move. Finished 11th.
Unruffled Charm — The turf-bred Williams9 runner was never able to replicate his grass form on this surface, finishing last in the 12-horse field.
About the Winner:
Bred by Big Jd Racing in New York, Meekshallinherit is a gray gelding by Native Music out of the mare Meekness. Now owned and trained by Big Jd Racing, the three-year-old has compiled a lifetime record of four wins from ten starts, with career earnings of $391.60 (in thousands). With this Grade III victory, Meekshallinherit has earned Kentucky Derby qualifying points — and a surprising new chapter on the Classic trail. A logical next engagement would be a Kentucky Derby prep at a higher level, such as the Florida Derby (Grade I) or the Tampa Bay Derby follow-up circuit, where he could test himself against the sport’s elite three-year-olds.
