Once the claiming crown races were over at CD, it was time for graded competition as field of six took part in the $300.000 Chilukki. It had all the feel of an evenly matched race, but Menacing Shadow would run away with a convincing two length victory. This is a filly that knows how to win, as it is the 11th time that she has done so in eighteen starts. After a non-winning streak of more than one for the first time in her career, she was given a couple of months off and was clearly ready to roll in this one! Menacing Shadow is trained by La Canada Racehorses, who picks up his second Chilukki win. He also won in 2021 with Zombie Storm. L R Rivera is the winning rider, his first such win. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:34.77, which is the third quickest in the race’s history. Let’s take a look at it:

(1/4 Mile- :23.31)- The race begins with Maxmillion Farm’s Decimas Queen and Nakamura Stables’ Childe Girl clearing the rest of the field and running side by side early on. It’s a length and a half to Hunt The Stars, who runs in the third position by herself for John Henry, and it’s the same margin back to the remaining three. This is where the eventual winner from La Canada Racehorses, Menacing Shadow, will run, as she is to the inside of Hoof On The Gas (Team 7 Illusions), while Houseofidentity (Noblepark) trails them all.

(½ Mile- :46.99)- There is little change with how they run as they continue down the backstretch and prepare to go around the turn. Decimas Queen and Childe Girl are inseparable on the lead and now lead Hunt The Stars by a full two lengths. Further back, L R Rivera knows that he cannot let Menacing Shadow get too far behind, and maintains his four-length deficit, as he begins to inch away from Hoof On The Gas. Houseofidentity is still content to run in the back while three wide.

(Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- The field works around the turn with Decimas Queen beginning to prevail over Childe Girl and pulling a full length in front. Hunt The Stars remains third around the turn but showed no interest in making a move on the top two. Midway through the turn, Menacing Shadow began to look very appealing, as she cut into the lead at a quick pace, and was positioned to make a move on the outside in the stretch. For now, she was still fourth, but on the verge of passing Hunt The Stars. Hoof On The Gas continued to run fifth, with Houseofidentity showing little.

(Finish- 1:34.77)- Entering the stretch, Decimas Queen would try to cling to her lead, but would be no match for Menacing Shadow, who had plenty of run saved up. It would be in the final furlong where Menacing Shadow was particularly strong, not only passing Decimas Queen, but making such quick work of her to go on and win by two lengths. Decimas Queen will complete the exacta and was a length and a half ahead of the third place Hoof On The Gas, who never really challenged for anything more than that. Hunt The Stars gets fourth, over Childe Girl and a flat Houseofidentity.

About The Winner- Menacing Shadow, trained by La Canada Racehorses and ridden to victory by L R Rivera, is a four-year-old filly by the late Menacing Ghost and out of the late Out Into. She was bred by The Freakshow as a second quarter two-year-old in California and was acquired by La Canada Racehorses with a $20.000 claim back in February 2024. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her eleventh in 18 starts, her fourth stake win and third graded win. Her career earnings are now $710.230.
