My Girl Makita Closes Fast to Take Canadian Stakes

   2  WO     Canadian Stakes (GII)

                   $250.000     3yo&Up F&M      1 1/8m Turf          3yo 120lbs   Older 123lbs

I just have to get over worrying about post positions because the outside ruled in the Canadian Stakes (GII) at WO on Saturday.  My Girl Makita, owned by Maxmillion Farm, used her patented late kick to get the job done by a neck in 1:45.67 for the mile and an eighth on the WO firm turf.  Just to her inside was Franke, and although she had the lead when they turned for home, she had to settle for the second spot in this one, another neck better than Pirate Petranella in third.

The field of eleven got away from the gate in this one turn mile and an eighth turf stakes with Lewis Bay on the early lead.  A group of four giving chase that included Better Commodity, Anna D, Why You Do That and Franke from the outside.  Back towards the inside for Pirate Petranella just in behind that group, Never Enough and Total Eclipse between that pair.  Twizt And Shout was next, Sweetness and My Girl Makita in her usual trailing position.

They made the long run down the backside and still had five furlongs to run, Lewis Bay showing the way by three, Better Commodity between horses, Anna D on her outside, Why You Do that on the hedge, Franke sill out four wide, Never Enough along the rail, then a gap of two back to Sweetness, Total Eclipse to her inside, another length and a half back to Pirate Petranella along the inside, Twizt And Shout, and My Girl Makita still under wraps and trailing.

Around the big dog leg and to the top of the lane, they moved past the five sixteenths pole and neared the top of the lane as Lewis Bay had lead every step of the way.  Anna D edging up on the leader three wide, then another length back to the trio of Why You Do That on the rail, Franke four wide, Better Commodity in the two path, another length to Never Enough, Sweetness a length back and five wide, then another length to the trio of Total Eclipse, Pirate Petranella on the rail, My Girl Makita five wide and now shaken a bit as Twizt And Shout was now the back marker.

The field made their way thru the lane and were at the furlong maker and we had the race we expected and they fan out and just about every horse had a shot from here…  Franke up to take the lead, Anna D on her inside, My Girl Makita widest of all and showing her patented late kick as she was gaining with every stride.  Lewis Bay along the rail, Sweetness wide and moving well, Never Enough just to her inside, Pirate Petranella continued in the two path, Why Do You Do That on her flank, Better Commodity still in striking distance mid-track, Twizt And Shout and Total Eclipse backed out of it.

Deep stretch and to the wire, we had a trio emerge as contenders, but it was My Girl Makita out wide that was moving best of all, Franke to her inside and Pirate Petranella on the inside… and as they passed under the wire, that’s exactly how the finished, My Girl Makita by a neck, Franke second another neck better than Pirate Petranella, Never Enough was a length back in fourth, Sweetness fifth, Anna D sixth, Twizt And Shout seventh, Total Eclipse eighth, Why You Do That ninth, Lewis Bay tenth and Better Commodity closed this one out.

My Girl Makita is a 3yo bay filly by Ginger Hagas – Shot Dog, by Dogs Bachelor Party, and she was bred by Lion King Stables here in ON.  Acquired by Maxmillion Farms via private sale back in Oct of last season, this was her third win from eleven starts, her first stakes score and she now has $526.670 in earnings.  She’s been the picture of consistency and you have to think she will only get better.  Congrat’s to the connections.
