Never Met Me, breaking alertly from stall three, went to the front in the opening strides of Saturday’s $125.000 G3 San Luis Rey and went unchallenged through the 12-furlong turf event enroute to a dominant victory. It was the fifth win in the last six starts for Never Met Me, with the last three victories in gate-to-wire fashion. The 6yo gelding now has $1,175.050 in earnings and a race record of 29-9-7-2.
Racing through fractions of :49.08, 1:13.29, and 2:00.19, Never Met Me was allowed to stroll around the SA turf course, unchallenged at any point, before striking the wire in 2:24.04. Afterburner was his closest competitor throughout and finished a length in front of Big Aspirations as that duo ran 2-3 the entire journey. Unified Minds broke with the place and show horses, but he was always fourth and was game in keeping Spankersville at bay at the wire. Completing the order of finish were Secret Dream, Panther High, and Stealth Commander.
