No Major Standouts in This Season’s Wonder Where

Five runners from four owners will tackle the Mile and a Quarter distance over the E P Taylor turf here at Woodbine on Saturday, many looking to rebound from some disappointing efforts in recent events. Can this be their turning point?

  • Wonder Where Stakes – Purse $225.000
  • Woodbine Race Track- For Fillies Three Years old, Foaled in Canada
  • One Mile and a Quarter- Turf track
  • August 10th, 2019.

For an event that offers a plus two hundred purse payout, it is surprising that in the past three seasons there have only been on average five runners per season. Both Mb Stables and Canadian Racing have engraved their names on this trophy three times, and it will only be Mb Stables to be looking for number four with his entry of No Fear. So lets start with that filly first.

Weight – 123 Pounds

Changes- Island Breeze– Adds Lasix

No Fear has a win and two runner-up finishes in five starts this year. Her victory came two starts ago after she attempted to break her maiden in five tries with three runner-up placings, then Churchill held the key going a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt. Made the switch back to the grass in her most recent Gr. III RGD event, and while she stalked in second throughout that event till late, she would come in fourth two shy as a 23-1 longshot. Has been using Parx for her morning exercises, so she just needs to reserve a little energy late to win. Runner-up possibilities again?

Sending out two by the names of Stay Weird and Zasy will be trainer Team 7 Illusions. Stay Weird is the homebred and definitely should out class his entrymate here. While she may be 0 for 5 this season in wins, her last effort was her first on the grass going six and a half over this track, and she showed she liked the feel of the sod. Her sire Gsin did break his maiden on the grass, and went runner-up in the Bold Ruckus sprint race at this track, so hopeful the genes are there for today’s event. With Zasy, I don’t quite understand her placing in this event. She has one win in five starts this year, and she is completely untested on the grass in her career. Recent works have not pointed in that direction, so unless she has been testing on the farm, I don’t think she will hit the top three today.

The final two runners both competed in this years Gr. I BEL Oaks event in early July, and their finishes were nothing to write home about. From the rail will be Smokey Stover’s Holualoa who finished ninth, three lengths back. The positive side of that event is she earned a 94 SRF rating, the best amongst this group. All four of her starts this year have come on the turf with a record of ( 1-1-1 ) for her efforts. Trainer can definitely use the money after making a major purchase recently of picking up Twin Towers with a Wells Fargo truck.

From the two post will be Chili King Stables Island Breeze who was a disappointing 13th some eleven lengths shy in the BEL Oaks. Lasix has been added for this event and even with that dismal effort, Wilson has been retained to try once more to get the job done. It was only her first start for this artful trainer, and hopefully the stay at this surface for her recent morning efforts will pay off at the wire. Here is hoping that the add does the trick too.

Duffer.
