The Lang Stakes (Grade 3)- $200.000 Purse
PIM- For Three Year Olds
Six Furlongs on the Dirt
May 21, 2022
No More Rattle had been successful as a sprinter, winning two of his four races that were sprints, but trainer Bigchief Stables gave in to the temptation to chase the KYD with him. In 2022, he would only run in preps for the race, and was a non factor, other than one fourth place finish. In the Lang Stakes, No More Rattle was back to a sprint and couldn’t have been happier. Running six furlongs was perfect for him, putting his record now at 3-for-5 in sprints. We won’t campaign for him to be renamed No More Routes yet, but No More Rattle certainly has shown that this is a type of race he excels in. His victory gives trainer Bigchief Stables their first win in the race, and the same for jockey M Franco. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:08.86, and that my friends, is your new record for the Lang Stakes. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :22.51)- Viking Lucy will be the early pacesetter as the Rock Creek entry is all by himself by a length running down the backstretch. It looked like there would be four all lined up side by side as stalkers, but in the outer lane, Arindel’s Red Ranger shows a little more ambition and moves ahead of the others to be second, and to his inside, Caliguska, trained by Mb Stables, is a half length behind him. Being restrained just a little bit into more of a midpack start would be King Pigeon (Delta Farms) and Coolio Code Party (Night Rider Stables). The eventual winner, No More Rattle sits fifth, running about a length from King Pigeon, and is about three to four lengths off the lead. On My Toes (The Freakshow) is all by himself at the back.
(½ Mile- :45.36, Top Of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- The field maintains the same pace and same general alignment as they make their way around the turn with Viking Lucy still out front. But entering the stretch, the excitement begins to pick up as one would expect. Red Ranger pulls to within a half length of the pacesetter while a great lane sets up right between the top two for King Pigeon to take advantage of and D E Centeno sets up his ride to do exactly that. Caliguska was shuffled over a lane and risked running into Red Ranger at this point. Meanwhile, on exit of the turn, M Franco asked No More Rattle to get going, and his horse was happy to oblige, sensing that the wire would be coming up soon instead of happening to keep running a few more furlongs. He ran in the fourth lane, and was about two and a half lengths from the lead. Elsewhere, Coolio Code Party could stay on the rail but had to make up a lot of ground and On My Toes needed to live up to his name to have a chance.
(Finish- 1:08.86)- Red Ranger would claim the lead momentarily in the stretch, but the best horses were clearly No More Rattle and King Pigeon and a good stretch battle would set up between them. No More Rattle cruising along the outside and King Pigeon splitting horses closer to the rail. In the dying moments, No More Rattle would have more power in his stride, and takes home the win by a length in a new stake record time. Second place King Pigeon was only .05 off the old stake record time himself. It was nearly two lengths back to the third place On My Toes who closed well, but gave up too much ground to the top two early. Red Ranger takes the final part of the purse, over Viking Lucy, Coolio Code Party, and Caliguska.
About The Winner- No More Rattle, trained by Bigchief Stables and ridden to victory by M Franco, is a three year old gelding by Timber Rattler and is out of Weep No More. He was bred by T Boy Racing in West Virginia as a first quarter two year old and was acquired by Bigchief Stables with a $12.500 when the horse was making his debut in May 2021. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his third in eight starts, his second stake win and first graded win. His career earnings are now $331.660.
