The Pegasus World Cup (Grade 1)- $3,000.000 Purse
GP- For Four Year Olds and Upward
One Mile and One Eighth on the Dirt
January 29, 2021
Fillies don’t have a Pegasus race just for them, unless they want to run on the grass. So, with no real equivalent for them, we had two in the field here in the Pegasus World Cup, taking on the males. It would be one of them getting the win, as Fashionable, saddled by Mb Stables, would top the second place Toxic Personality by half a length to win one for the girls! It goes down as the third win for Mb Stables, and the second in three years as he also won with Tactical in 2020. Jockey Mar Garcia is a first time winner. Congratulations to them! The time of the victory was 1:48.04, let’s take a look!
(½ Mile- :44.76)- Our eventual winner from Mb Stables was not fashionably late to get out to the lead, as Fashionable quickly opened up a two length over her closest competitors. That closest rival was actually her stablemate, as Howl Of The Hound ran by himself in the second position. After another length, we have a four wide group from the second lane on out. John Henry’s Splash Mountain takes the inside lane, with Combat Wombat (Maxmillion Farm) running next to him, then Dutty John Crow (Night Rider Stables) and Night Creature (D J C Racing Stables). After a length and a half, we have Space Commander (Nakamura Stables) and Charleys Latte (John Henry). It’s two more lengths to Toxic Personality (Arindel) and Freddo Cappuccino (Mo Mentum Farm). Lined up behind them, it’s Just Wanna Blaze (Gdp Inc), Z Command (Smokey Stover), Gran Z (Maxmillion Farm), and Expert Eye (TwinTowersRacing).
(¾ Mile- 1:08.43)- Down the backstretch and into the final turn, the pace of the race remains quick as Fashionable continued to run real well, and to herself midway through the turn. Her length is still two lengths, with Howl Of The Hound still in the second position. Splash Mountain runs third, and starts to make her move on the reigning KYD and PRK winner. Behind them, it’s become five wide as Charleys Latte and Space Commander look to join Combat Wombat, Night Creature and Dutty John Crow. It’s another length and a half to Toxic Personality, and the rest of the field as a lot more work to do.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Around the turn, Fashionable continues to run very well and is showing no signs of tiring. Her lead is still two lengths, with neither Howl Of The Hound or Splash Mountain being able to cut into that advantage. After a length and a half, Charleys Latte is on the inside of three wide and running in the fourth position. Night Creature and Dutty John Crow are holding their ground, but not making a push. Space Commander is also not showing any progress and Combat Wombat is dropping out of things at a quicker pace. On the flip side, making a move from behind is Toxic Personality. To do this, he has to swing out about five or six wide on exit of the turn and eventually move to the outside of Night Creature. Just Wanna Blaze was looking interested as well, but more work to do if he wanted a shot at the win.
(Finish- 1:48.04)- Fashionable ran a quick pace during this race, but if people were waiting for her to pack it in, that was not going to happen, at least not until there would not be enough time to catch her. In the dying moments, she did seem a little leg weary, but no one was able to cut into her lead until late. On the far outside, the only one making this potentially interesting late would be Toxic Personality, who was making his debut for Arindel. It was a great bid, and it would get him second, but Fashionable had enough to secure the half length victory! Splash Mountain is third best, never threatening for more, and Just Wanna Blaze would nip Howl Of The Hound at the wire for the final piece of the purse. It’s another length to Charleys Latte, then Gran Z, Expert Eye, Space Commander, Freddo Cappuccino, Dutty John Crow, Night Creature, Z Command, and Combat Wombat.
About The Winner- Fashionable, trained by Mb Stables and ridden to victory by Mar Garcia, is a five year old mare by Grande Sournoise and is out of Balais Bruit. He was bred by Drabfantasy as a third quarter two year old and acquired by Mb Stables in private sales when she was still unraced, for $85.000 in July 2019. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her ninth in 21 starts, and her sixth stake win, all of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $2,639.280.
