The Beaugay (Grade 3)- $200.000 Purse
BEL- For Fillies and Mares Four Years Old and Upward
One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf
May 11, 2019
Not Charleigh Now entered The Beaugay making her debut at the graded stake level. She was on a good run of form, and coming off an ungraded win, it seemed like a good time for her to make that jump. She would have F Pennington aboard, the same jockey that rode her in her last win. In a deep field, she was not one of my picks, but was certainly still very capable. It was not time for Not Charleigh Now in her first 23 races to win at this level, but now it is yes, Charleigh’s time had come. The winning trainer is Gdp Inc, and he does so for the second time. The great F Pennington wins for the second time in his illustrious career. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:40.12, one of the better times in the race’s history. Note that Saddle Happy would be a late scratch. Let’s take a look!
(1/4 Mile- :24.06)- At the start of the race, Woman On A Mission and On The Square jump out to the lead together for their respective trainers, Greeko Holdem and Crocker Ggs. They are side by side as Heckle Me Pink stalks them a length back for Nakamura Stables. The eventual winner, Not Charleigh Now is mixed in with the pack on the rail for Gdp Inc, trailing the pacesetter by three lengths. Right beside her are Millinneal (Mb Stables) and Fomalhaut (John Henry). Trailing are Calling The Shots (Diablo Diablo) and Snacks (D J C Racing Stables). About five lengths separates first from last at this point.
(½ Mile- :47.45)- The second quarter mile does not see much change as the field runs down the backstretch. Woman On A Mission does take control of the lead by half a length, but On The Square is still running well. Heckle Me Pink continues to patiently stalk. In the middle of the field, Not Charleigh Now maintains her position, and does not attempt to advance yet. Millinneal, a huge long shot in the field because millennials in attendance didn’t bet on her due to being offended by the misspelling, started looking to move forward a bit.
(Top Of Stretch, 1.5F To Go)- Woman On A Mission continues to hold her lead as the field makes their way around the turn and into the stretch. There was jockeying for position behind her, but she still seemed to look like she’d remain a contender. On The Square was still officially second, but in the process of being swallowed up by the pack. Millinneal had the best lane at this point, but Not Charleigh Now was wide to move to the outside a bit to have a clear lane for herself. She only had a bit less then two lengths to make up now. Heckle Me Pink, who had been stalking, lacked a response as the rivals moved alongside. Fomalhaut went five wide and had gained ground well. Snacks was closing in, but had a wall in front of her and would need something to open up. Calling The Shots was still a non factor.
(Finish- 1:40.12)- Early in the stretch, both Millinneal and Not Charleigh Now looked to be matching strides as the battled for the lead, with the emerging presence of Fomalhaut adding to the excitement. In the dying moments, Not Charleigh Now had just a little more, and pulled away from Millinneal just enough to win the race by about a length. Fomalhaut ends up taking the second position, outkicking Millinneal. The pacesetter, Woman On A Mission made a valiant bid to hold on along the rail, and this did not go without reward as she edges out Millinneal in the third place photo. Snacks came on very well and just missed out in this photo as well, but will need to start her run earlier in the future. Calling The Shots was an uninspired sixth, ahead of the tiring Heckle Me Pink and On The Square.
About The Winner- Not Charleigh Now, trained by Gdp Inc, and ridden to victory by the great F Pennington, is a four year old filly by the late Not Laffin Now, and is out of Charleigh Americana. She was bred in the great breeding state of Pennsylvania as a first quarter two year old by Gdp Inc, the only trainer for which she has ever known. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her sixth in 24 starts, her second stake win, and first graded win. Her career earnings are now $394.900.
