Nothing Questionable About This Year’s Prince of Wales

This seasons Second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown will have eight entries going to the post at 18:20 with one exception! Queens Plate winner Questionable will not be running here at the Fort on Tuesday.

  • Prince Of Wales Stakes – Purse $400.000
  • Fort Erie Racetrack- For Three year olds
  • One Mile and Three sixteenths – Main Track
  • July 23rd, 2019

While Mb Stables will have a trio of runners for this event on Tuesday, absent will be Questionable. I was able to catch up with Dan and ask him exactly why he wasn’t sending out the Plate winner. ” The main reason why is I see Questionable as a potential BC horse later this year.” So I am aiming him towards Graded stakes races where he can gain points.” I asked him which is the focus for his future and Dan smiled and said ” I am pointing him towards The Dandy for his next effort, with the focus being on the BC Dirt Mile in the fall.” He will have the Plate runner-up Burning Approval racing here, so could make it tough for this field.

So lets run down this group and see how this race should stake up;

1 Burning Approval ( Mb Stables ) In the irons- Bejarano R. – Interesting for this chestnut is the switch in riders for this event. Will face off again against Born To Laff who many thought was a dead heat race in the Plate Trials. Was made the post time favorite at WO for the Plate, and he still hasn’t won an event since his maiden victory, but his past two efforts were huge. Factor in today.

2 Tourniquet ( Mo Mentum Farm ) In the Irons- Bravo J. – Is coming off his only win of the season last time by against Alw47.5/N2L. That was on the turf here at this track, and now tries the to rebound back. Did compete in the Trials, but finished five lengths out in sixth place. Recent works are keen and could show some improvement, but he may be in tough for this affair. Midpack.

3 Genuine Pleasure ( Nakamura Stables ) In the Irons- Beschizza A. – Broke his maiden to close out last season, and since his return this year, the pot has been somewhat dry. Had a win and two runner-up placings in his first three starts, so not sure why the Geld this March. Since then, has not been in the top three in two starts and may just very well struggle on the day. I’ll pass.

4 Born To Laff ( Joshua Stables ) In the Irons- Ortiz I Jr. – He managed to win in the Plate Trials two starts ago, then made a closing effort in the Queens Plate to finish third just three quarters of a length shy. Ortiz is back in command once again here, and he definitely wont let his ride get to far back for his late kick effort. Seems to be improving with every effort he puts out, and today could be the icing on the cake. One to beat in my opinion.

5 Figured Out ( Mb Stables ) In the Irons- Sanchez M J – A four time winner in nine career starts, has yet to get back to this level this season. Took to the front here at Woodbine against Clm47.5 in late June and while he did get out slightly better then four lengths at one point, the field closed up and he would settle for a one length victory. May have to use the same tactic here and hopefully hang for a share.

6 Dont Worry Be Jolly ( Blushing Meadows ) In the Irons- Pennington F. Grass has been unable to get to grow under this bay geldings feet as he has been moved twice recently. Last raced on the 22nd of March, he was purchased in April, then resold again in late June. Was switched back and forth from dirt to the turf in his past four events and seems to prefer the grass. Looking at his works, they seem to be sharp, but its been a while and may need one back.

7 Salar de Uyuni ( Mb Stables ) In the Irons- Velazquez J R.- Third entry for this stable and while many will be looking to the inside runner, i personally feel this gray has a better chance at being the upsetter against this group. Took on some older runners in his most recent win in the Gr. III Iselin Stakes, and also performed well in the Gotham and the Day Mile Stakes. Has ten points towards the Dirt Mile, so he should be hungry here. Take notice.

8 Piraya ( John Henry ) In the Irons – Talamo J – While going runner-up in the Gr. III Marine two starts ago, headed for the Queens Plate with hopes of grabbing a share, but would only come in fifth, three lengths shy. Rider should have him parked a little closer in this event, allowing him to spring to action in the lane. Has been concentrating works at Belmont in prep for this event. Will need his best today.
