TC of America – Grade 2 – $350.000
For Fillies and Mares Three Years Old and Upward
KEE – 6 furlongs – Dirt
October 8, 2022
Oceanus came from mid-field to beat a full field of very talented ladies. She not only won the TC of America, she also earned a place in the gate for the Fillies and Mares Sprint come BC Day.
Slckmoment Laga took the early lead and was matched stride for stride by Storm of Fire after a furlong. Always A Virgin was in good position third on the outside. To her inside Lassitude, Main Flirt and Last Lady competed for fourth. Behind them Oceanus, Hawkes Bay and Mendocino Gal made up the next flight, with Hitch A Ride, Change For A Twenty, and Cherokee Ripper content to bring up the rear.
Into the turn, Slckmoment Laga had a short lead over Storm Of Fire. Always A Virgin separated herself from the rest of the field but still trailed the leaders by more than two lengths. Nothing much changed around the turn, except that Hawkes Bay began making a subtle move past horses and closed the gap behind Always A Virgin.
At the head of the stretch, Slckmoment Laga took the lead from Storm Of Fire by a length. Always A Virgin closed on Storm Of Fire and Last Lady made a move on the inside. Oceanus was still four and a half behind the leader.
In mid-stretch, Always A Virgin caught Storm Of Fire for second. Last Lady looked for running room on the rail. Oceanus made a big move up the middle.
Oceanus popped out of the field like a champagne cork, passing horses three at a time. She took the lead with a quarter of a mile to run and hit the wire a length in front.
Complete order of finish:
#1 Oceanus (Wood Duck Stables)
#2 Always A Virgin (Tinkey)
#3 Last Lady (Lindeman Prairie)
#4 Hawkes Bay (Smokey Stover)
#5 Slckmoment Laga (Night Rider Stables)
#6 Main Flirt (Mb Stables)
#7 Mendocino Gal (T Boy Racing)
#8 Change For A Twenty (Mb Stables)
#9 Storm of Fire (Mb Stables)
#10 Lassitude (TwinTowersRacing)
#11 Cherokee Ripper (John Henry)
#12 Hitch A Ride (South Shore Stables)
Oceanus has one loss in five starts this year, but this one was the biggest win of her career. By Storming out of Beginning Of The End (Cherokee Sunset), the three-year-old filly was bred in FLA and purchased for $22.000 last August. The win brings her career earnings to $408.000 and earns her a place in the BC Fillies and Mares Sprint. Congratulations to Oceanus and Wood Duck Stables!
