NY Stallion Series- Great White Way ($500.000 Purse)
AQU- For Two Year Olds Foaled in NY
Seven Furlongs on the Dirt
December 16, 2023
Two-year-old races can always be unpredictable, but our pick to win the Great White Way seemed to be in a good position to grab the victory. However, that would not be the case as a strong stretch run by One Beer, a 21/1 longshot, would light up the tote board and have trainer South Shore Stables drinking (but not drinking a lot) in celebration! One Beer had come into the race with one win in four starts, and that win came on April 1st. He had come into this race with a third-place effort in the Aspirant Stakes at FL, but that did not do much to impress people to wager on him. One Beer figures to get a lot more support after this massive win! This is a well bred horse, sired by Cherokee Sunset, but is also out of Blondewithawarrant, the dam to Penalty Shot, a still active gelding with over $1,100.000 in earnings. One Beer is off to a good start to get there! He’s trained by South Shore Stables and was ridden by D Cabrera. For each, it is their first win in the race. Congratulations to the time! The time of the race was 1:21.73, the quickest of the editions run at seven furlongs. Let’s take a look at it!
(1/4 Mile- :22.97)- Three horses vie for the early lead, and prevailing in that battle will by John Crow Dem, for Night Rider Stables. He runs in between two others that are each trained by Smokey Stover. Lightning, who we picked to win the race is running on his inside, and the third lane belongs to Hallelujah. After a length, Stamp And Go is fourth on the outside for Night Rider Stables, slightly ahead of Riggins Racing’s Ocean Storm. In the middle of the pack, we have Back To Reality, for D J C Racing Stables and also right there is our eventual winner from South Shore Stables, One Beer. At this time, he has about two and a half lengths to make up on the leader and is running in the third lane. The next group of horses sees Creepy Romantic (Broken Spoke Stables) and Hound Dog (Threshold) heads apart but on the inside and far outside. Next is Gaslight (Mb Stables) and Turbo (Arindel), with Summer In The City (D J C Racing Stables).
(½ Mile- :46.20, top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Finishing the backstretch trip and rounding the turn, our three frontrunners are looking strong, with John Crow Dem showing plenty to get his trainer excited. Lightning would stay right beside him around the turn, but his stablemate Hallelujah was not quite as able to keep up with them, although he also was not backing out. Entering the stretch, it looked like these top two would have a nice battle, but as we look back further in the field, we can see One Beer showing more interest in making a run especially over the second half of the turn. He had not made up a lot of ground quite yet, but he had the recognizable look of a horse that was about to pose a big threat to the leaders. Ocean Storm and Back To Reality two-year-old steady to the leaders, and further back, it was time to go if anyone wanted to make a charge.
(Finish- 1:21.73)- Early in the stretch, Lightning would get the better of John Crow Dem, and took the lead with around a furlong to go. His work was not done, as One Beer was running well and closing in with every stride. Would Lightning be able to hold on, or would One Beer stop the storm and pick up the win for himself? As we approached the wire, and if I didn’t already know who won this race, I would have thought that Lightning was going to hang on because he seemed to be running well enough, but in the dying moments, a final burst by One Beer, determined to get the win would force a very close photo at the wire? After reviewing it, One Beer had indeed gotten the victory in the final stride, with Lightning settling for second. John Crow Dem held on for third, beaten by almost a length, with Hallelujah barely hanging on for fourth over Creepy Romantic and Back To Reality. The rest of the order will read Hound Dog, Ocean Storm, Summer In The City, Gaslight, Turbo, and Stamp And Go.
About The Winner- One Beer, trained by South Shore Stables and ridden to victory bt D Cabrera, is a two-year-old gelding by Cherokee Sunset and is out of Blondewithawarrant.
