The South Ocean Stakes for ON-bred 2yo fillies offers a purse of $100.000 and will be contested for just the 2nd time at 6.5 furlongs. Prior to last year, the first eleven editions were ran at 8.5 furlongs. No HRP trainers have been able to win this event more than once, but jockey P. Husbands (2014, 2017, 2018) has taken three of these events.
This year’s South Ocean drew five runners, but only one has taken more than a maiden-breaker. Here’s the field:
#1 Broomstick Storm (Arindel/D. Moran 120): Rail-drawn filly wheels right back just 10-days after breaking her maiden here. Shortens-up a half-furlong, but she’s speedy enough to stay closer if she needs to. Have to worry about coming back so quick, but no doubting the talent. Gonna pass, but may regret it.
#2 Fire (Mo Mentum Farm/P. Husbands 120): Second filly entering of of a local MSW score, but at least she returns almost four weeks since that effort. Another that has shown early foot, she should be able to utilize this draw to her benefit. First-time facing winners and that is a tough question for some horses to answer,
#3 Pirate Code (Big Guns Stables/R.M. Hernandez 120): Took the debut at the free track before failing to beat a horse in last month’s stakes try. Maybe the 1:10 drill in company will make her more competitive in this spot and she may finally catch a dry track after the first two efforts were run over courses labeled good. Lots of unknowns and can’t overlook them all.
#4 Paris Broadway (Glorify Stables/S. Ryan 122): August win here at this trip and against this same type of company will cost her two pounds on Sunday. Faced that same scenario last month when 3rd here, so maybe she can make it a non-issue. This will be her fourth stakes try after her MCL win on debut so you know she’s battle-tested. Think she gets it done on a dry strip.
#5 Mans Final Frontier (Acber Farms/S.X. Bridgmohan 120): Outside runner just missed locally last month under similar conditions. That effort was her first crack at winners and she beat the horse drawn just to her inside. That race was at 5.5 furlongs, but she broke the maiden going this trip so she should handle it fine. The draw is the biggest thing going against her, but feels like there is talent here.
Final Analysis: We’ll take the 4 to turn the tables on the 5 and take down the South Ocean Stakes at WO. Good luck to everyone involved.
