One Mile and One Sixteenth on the Turf

Perfect Class was a star on the turf, and among her wins included a pair of Grade 3’s. That would prompt trainer Sccj Stables to give KYO preps a try, and she actually did run very well against good company in the Davona Dale. At the end of the day, she would not be able to make the KYO, but like Lassitude in the Eight Belles, it didn’t keep her from running at CD on KYO Day. Perfect Class would head back to the green for the $500.000 Edgewood, and with regular jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard, she would score the biggest win of her career thus far and prevented would could have otherwise been a sweep of the top three spots for Arindel. For Sccj Stables, it is his first win in this race, and it is the second win for Gutierrez. Congratulations to each of them! The time of the victory was 1:41.95 on the turf that could only be listed as good. Here’s a look at it!

(1/4 Mile- :23.51)- Arindel’s My Imagination would jump out to a very real lead from the starting gate, and would hold an advantage of a length and a half as they prepared to move around the first turn. Running in the second position, while being able to stay on the rail would be our eventual winner, Perfect Class, for Sccj Stables. She would have some company in this stalking position as Impact The Party, out of South Shore Stables was to her outside, and running in the third lane was Ifyerwokeyerajoke, for TwinTowersRacing. In the middle of the field, Exclusive Native W9 (Williams9) and Bonnie (Arindel) run together, and right behind them, it is Tequa (Arindel). At the back, it’s Chance 2 Ask (Threshold) and the sluggish at the break Tropical Mama (John Henry).

(½ Mile- :47.19)- Not much has changed during the second quarter of the race as My Imagination is still out there all by herself. Both Perfect Class and Impact The Party do not let her get too far ahead of them, but they have lost the third horse that was with them as Ifyerwokeyerajoke is cancelled from running with them. Bonnie creeps forward a little bit, and it looks like Exclusive Native W9 is planning on doing the same on the outside.

(Top Of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- Towards the end of the backstretch, Perfect Class decides that she is not going to wait any longer to make her move and goes off the rail to make the pass of My Imagination. It does not take long for her to pull up alongside the pacesetter, and within the turn, she would complete this pass rather easily. At the top of the stretch, she was in a good position, out in front, and leading by a length. Impact The Party, who had been running with Perfect Class early, was unable to make the same charge, and was falling into the clutches of the longshot, Bonnie, a filly that would still be making Sccj Stables nervous at this point. Exclusive Native W9 did not have the same response, but Tequa was making a good push near the rail. Also, Chance 2 Ask was beginning to show a lot more interest as they moved into the stretch.

(Finish- 1:41.95)- With a furlong to go, Perfect Class seemed to have the race in the bag, she was over a length ahead of the field, and still in good stride. But, this was not going to be the end quite yet. In the late moments, Bonnie began to make up ground quickly, but she would run out of time. Perfect Class still wins this race by a half length, and perhaps making a statement with the win that she is the best female three year old turf horse in the game. Bonnie is second, and My Imagination is caught for third by stablemate Tequa, but second to fourth is still all-Arindel. It was another length to Chance 2 Ask, who defeats Exclusive Native W9, Impact The Party, Ifyerwokeyerajoke, and Tropical Mama.

About The Winner- Perfect Class, trained by Sccj Stables and ridden to victory by Mario Gutierrez, is a three year old filly by Asset Class, and is out of Rosemari Perfect. She was bred by her current trainer as a second quarter two year old in California. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fifth in eight starts and her third stake win, all of which are graded. Her career earnings are now $551.240.
