Mamzelle (Grade 3)- $225.000 Purse
CD- For Fillies Three Years Old
Five and a Half Furlongs on the Turf
May 10, 2025
Saturday would finally be Piatt’s day. The three-year-old filly had been a close second or third several times at the ungraded level and always seemed to run a good race every time she hit the track. However, a stake victory had been something that had eluded her. In the Mamzelle, she was finally able to change that, taking the lead in the stretch and inching away to win by about a length. Piatt was the post time favorite and was our second choice in the preview. She is trained by Royalty Stables, and it is his first win in the race, and that’s also true for jockey B Curtis. Congratulations to them! The race was won in a time of 1:02.51, the quickest of the three editions of the Mamzelle that have been at this distance. Let’s take a look at it:
(1/4 Mile- :22.31)– Heading down the backstretch to begin the race, it’s People Easer who emerges with the advantage for Mb Stables. Eighteen Ninety Two runs in second and is to her outside for Mo Mentum Farm. People Easer is not immediately able to get to the rail, due to the presence of three horses within a length of her. Our eventual winner from Royalty Stables, Piatt, is one of these three, as she is able to run tight to the rail. She’s fifth right now, however, as both Shine To Class (Our Athletes) and Just Average (Mb Stables) are a half-length in front of her. Running right behind this group of five wide horses are both Categorical Decision (Asgar) and Bullet Dash (La Canada Racehorses). At the back, only Matey (Red Fox Farms) has a deficit of over two lengths to make up at this time, as she is five off the pace.
(Top of Stretch, 1.7F To Go)- People Easer is able to get to the rail fairly soon in the turn, but Eighteen Ninety Two is not as fortunate, and must continue to run five wide as they work around it. These are still the top two at the top of the stretch, but there is a large gap between them for Shine To Class and Just Average to come on through, so neither of them have any excuses at this point. Piatt was still riding the rail, and was right behind People Easer, and was content to hold that position instead of making a move on exit of the turn. Categorical Decision and Bullet Dash got a little closer, making the top seven only separated by a length and a half, at most. Matey was not getting involved, but at least she had a great view of the action in front of her.
(Finish- 1:02.51)- Early in the stretch, when Piatt did not come down off the rail, it looked like she squandered her opportunity as Categorical Decision moved closer and took the lane that Piatt could have utilized. Fortunately for her, Categorical Decision would leave more room than she probably need too, so give her the Courteous Horse Of The Race award as Piatt was eventually able to take the lane to the outside of People Easer. With a furlong to go, any of the top seven had a shot, so it would all come down to the final strides to determine our winner, and with a half a furlong to go, these seven almost looked the same way as they would when they were released from the starting gate, it was so close. For Piatt, who has seen these close runs to the wire end up as seconds or thirds, but not wins, it may have looked like Deja vu. B Curtis, however, was not going to allow that to be the result for his filly again, and Piatt would surge to the front, ahead of the pack, and win by almost a length. Longshots take second and third as Bullet Dash edges out Categorical Decision. Shine To Class is perfect no more, finishing fourth, ahead of dead heating stablemates Just Average and People Easer. Eighteen Ninety Two’s wide trip got the best of her, and almost found herself passed by the never involved today, Matey.
About The Winner- Piatt, trained by Royalty Stables and ridden to victory by B Curtis, is a three-year-old filly by Valvano and is out of Sheza Hacker. She was bred as a yearling by Royalty Stables in California, and they have been together throughout. Congratulations to the connections! The win is her fourth in nine starts and her first stake win. Her career earnings are now $410.200.
