6 BEL The Bold Ruler (GIII)
$200.000 3yo&Up 7f Dirt 3yo 121 lbs Older 124 lbs +penalties
This is a race I love to cover and have followed in real life since I was a yung’in… we look at the field for Sunday’s The Bold Ruler (GIII) going seven panels on the BEL main track. I’m going with Mb Stables and Dont Worry Be Jolly here today… he looked good taking the DeFrancis (GIII) at LRL and ran well to be fourth in the Vosburgh (GII) over this track. He gets the two pound penalty for the win, but I think he overcomes that with ability. Let’s go right next door and give Forever Thirsty a shot in this one. He has been the picture of consistency and I see no reason for him to change that here. The extra furlong may be just what he needs to get back to the Kodak booth. I’d give Mr Charming a big shot today as well. That was a solid win in the PRX Dirt Mile in his most recent and if he repeats that race, he could be tough to get past.
You can make a case for quite a few of these so grab a wobble pop and let’s get down to the rail for what should be a fun race.
Here’s The Field –
Purchased two starts back and has a win and a third at the Alw level since then. This is an obvious step up in class but he has shown speed on both dirt and turf and may have an outside shot at upsetting the apple cart.
Tagged for $45.000 last out after a string of four straight victories on the free side of things. He shows eleven wins from eighteen starts, so if they don’t tell him where he is, maybe he won’t know and just keeps on running.
Snagged out of a $4.000 claimer four starts back and has two wins from those four races, both at the Alw level. He was fourth vs. NY-bred stakes company, so he’s obviously in need of some improvement to run with the likes of this group.
Another that changed hands just three races back (by private sale) and it’s been a mixed bag since moving to the new barn. One first start back taking down Alw types at ELP, then was ninth in the CT Classic (GII) and seventh in the Kelso Hcp (GII) over this track. It’s back in with similar so should we expect something better?
Four wins from ten seasonal starts including the DeFrancis Mem (GIII) two back, then was closing fast to be fourth beaten three-quarters of a length in the Vosburgh (GII) over this strip. Picks up a two pound impost for that win, but he looks the part to me.
Very solid season for this one as he hasn’t been off of the board in seven starts. Just missed in the Salvatore Mile (GIII) at MTH, beat OptAlw horses at SAR on a wet main track and just missed win third in the Louisville Thoroughbred at CD in his most recent… he’s solid and must be given a big look.
This one got back on track two back taking down Alw types at MTH then was last of six in the Ack Hcp (GIII) at CD in his most recent trip to the starting gate. When he’s good, he can be tough, but he’s a bit of a hit-or-miss type so he will need his best to be part of this one.
He’s still looking for his first win of the ’21 season but has been close in his last few. Second at TUP in a stakes, was up the track in the Kona Stakes (GIII) at SA, then was around for a minor check facing Alw types in his last two. They called the vet over, which is odd for a 4yo, but let’s see if that is the little bit extra he needs for concentration.
Won an OptAlw race at DMR three back but was sixth in the Travers (GI) and seventh in the PA Derby (GI), so they shorten up the distance and drop down a bit to see if they can shake this colt up. He has shown some speed, so maybe he gets a new lease on life today.
Changed hands at the June Auction and has been hit-or-miss since. Seventh in his first start for the new connections, then won vs Alw types at ELP, then was second in the fore-mentioned DeFancis Mem (GIII) only to run seventh in the Phoenix (GII) at KEE last out. Who shows up for this one?
Acquired via the hostile takeover four back and paid dividends right away taking the Thors Echo at SA in the first start for the new barn. Second in the Vigil Stakes (GIII) at WO then showed very little in the Forego (GI) at SAR. Bounced back from that taking the PRX Dirt Mile last out, so this seems like a good spot for him
