BEL Race #4 $300.000 7-Furlongs

F&M 4+ Handicap Weights (117-122)

Track Record-1:20.41 (Soy Dinero-2004)

Stakes Record-1:21.45 (Ponderosa-2022)

For the third year in a row, the $300.000 G2 Bed o Roses had the stakes record time equalled/bested.  This time it was the 5yo mare Ponderosa who uncorked a devastating run through the lane to secure the first graded win of remarkably consistent career.  The Smokey Stover-trainee has now earned $368.110 in a career that has seen her earn five wins from sixteen starts.

Ponderosa broke in the third, and final, flight about five lengths off of the pace as Christina G led a four horse second flight in the early stages.  Sitting in the two-path, between runners, Ponderosa was covered-up and relaxing nicely as the leader bounded along through an opening quarter in :22.99.

The eventual winner was still five lengths back as Christina G took the field through the turn for home.  Ponderosa drifted through the three and four paths before finally finding a seam in the five-wide as she entered the top of the lane.  Unleashing her run, she quickly passed four rivals and set her sights on the Mb Stables-trained duo of Christina G and Storm Of Fire as the former posted three-quarters in 1:09.24.

Traveling best of all through the final furlong, Ponderosa went by her two rivals without much trouble and crossed the wire three-quarters of a length in front of Christina G who valiantly held off her stablemate for the place honor.  The final time for the 7-furlongs was 1:21.45, .01 faster than the previous two runnings and establishing a new stakes record.  Completing the order of finish were Shes A Freak, Ginger Lee, Jedediah, Lady Narloff, and Great Mojo.

Congratulations to Ponderosa and Smokey Stover on their victory in the G2 Bed o Roses Handicap at BEL.
