The Dwyer (Grade 3)- $200.000 Purse
AQU- For Three Year Olds
One Mile on the Dirt
July 6, 2024
The Dwyer was a great race for Fractious, as his two entries picked up 1-2 finish, with Power Grid topping stablemate Master And Commander, plus a slew of others vying for second, to grab the victory following a fantastic come from behind effort. I must say that this one surprised me, as I was not really excited about Power Grid coming into the race based on recent results. It’s good to see that he could still fire this one off, and now we will see how much he can build on it. For Fractious, this is his first Dwyer win, and that is also true for jockey R L Moore. Congratulations to them! The time of the win was 1:34.31, which cannot be fairly compared to prior editions due to being at a different track. Let’s take a look at it now:
(1/4 Mile- :22.95)- No one seemed particularly hurried out of the starting gate, and the early leader will be Rolling Loud, for Mb Stables. His lead is a length over a group of three stalkers, with our pick to win, Extreme Flyer, having a slight advantage here for La Canada Racehorses. He’s in the third lane while Backroad Bounty, out of Aer Stables, is on the rail and Big Jd Racing’s Maravich runs between them. Running side by side in the middle of the field are Orange Pilled (Big Guns Stable) and Red Bull (D J C Racing Stables), and a length behind them is Lasting Impressions (Alydar Stables). Molten (Mb Stables) is next, and at the back of the pack are the two that will be at the front at the wire. Power Grid is a length ahead of Fractious stablemate, Master And Commander, here.
(½ Mile- :46.42)- There is not much that changes in the backstretch, as Rolling Loud rolls along with the lead. Extreme Flyer and Backroad Bounty are close for second, but Maravich falls into the clutches of Orange Pilled and Red Bull. Lasting Impressions runs his race run behind them, and Molten creeps forward just a little bit. At the back, Power Grid and Master And Commander run side by side with no concerns about what is going on ahead of them.
(Top of Stretch, 1.8F To Go)- Midway into the turn, R L Moore moves Power Grid to the outside to make his run, and as they get closer to the stretch, it’s apparent that he needs to make a particularly wide trip. This is how Power Grid has been running lately, but now he would need to pass them all. Master And Commander did not make the same type of move, being content to hold his position with the possibility to room opening up near the inside. At the front, Rolling Loud was not aware of the danger lurking from way back yet, although his trainer’s eyes were certainly aware of Power Grid’s move. The rest of the field maintained their positions on the track without making a bid on the leader.
(Finish- 1:34.31)- With a furlong to go, Power Grid had been making nice progress on the outside and had about two and a half lengths to make up. While you could sense that he might get Rolling Loud at this point, what about the likes of Red Bull or Backroad Bounty, who may have also had something saved up for the final moments. Towards the rail, Master And Commander took advantage of that room and was also gaining ground quickly. Approaching the wire, there was no one would outpower Power Grid’s closing kick, and he would go on to win while pulling away, for an eventual two length win. Behind him, there was a wild six-way photo for place, but in the end, there are no dead heats among them so we can be glad for that. It is Master And Commander getting the nod there to make Fractious even more thrilled, with Red Bull third, then Rolling Loud, Backroad Bounty, Lasting Impressions, and Extreme Flyer. Finishing it out are Maravich, Molten, and Orange Pilled.
About The Winner- Power Grid, trained by Fractious and ridden to victory by R L Moore, is a three-year-old gelding by Power and is out of the late Laskarina Bouboulina. He was bred as a first quarter two-year-old in West Virginia by Panionios Racing and was acquired by Fractious with a $50.000 claim in July 2023 at SAR. Congratulations to the connections! The win is his sixth in 11 starts, his fourth stake win and third graded win. His career earnings are now $651.200.
